He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a son of the late Clarence and Mary Elswick Fletcher, both Buchanan County natives. He was a retired miner with Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. at Jewell Valley, Va., and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7327. He had made his home in the Claypool area most of his life, was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and was a member of the Reynolds Ridge Community Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Janet Sizemore Fletcher; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Donna Jean) Shortt of Abingdon and Mrs. Thomas (Nesta) Sparks of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Fern Hudson of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Effie Davis of Tampa and Mrs. Uva McDilda of Abingdon; one brother, Mr. Waldon Fletcher of Tampa; one grandchild, Clinton Olis Sparks; two step- grandchildren, Kevin Dean Shortt and Christopher Bradley Shortt; and two great-grandchildren, Tristen Wayne Sparks and Clara Breann Sparks. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Lawrence Hayes and Rev. Rick Pruitt officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Winfred McGlothlin, Fred McGlothlin Jr., Jim Ball, Leroy Nelson, Frazier McGlothlin, Ernie Horton, Lonnie Perkins and Mark Sexton. Honorary pallbearers: Larry Kyle, Bernard Sparks, Stanley Sparks and Timmy Sparks. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter 31 will conduct military graveside rites.
