TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - John David Fox, 4 Feb 1917 ----¤¤¤---- "Clinch Valley News" Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday, February 9, 1917 TYPED AS WRITTEN BURKES’ GARDEN CITIZEN IS DEAD John D. Fox Was Ill Only Short Time With Pneumonia, Following An Accident—Was Highly Respected The sudden and unexpected death of JOHN DAVID FOX has caused profound sorrow, pain and grief. His death was not only a blow to his family and immediate relatives, but to the entire community and county. He was one of those men upon whom the Commonwealth looks as its ornaments, and whom we are glad meet in their homes, in their places of business and in their assemblies of public men. His was a life we are glad to hold up, and all who knew him are agreed that he was a good man, a useful citizen, whose name Burke’s Garden will always delight to mention. He was glad to see others prosper. He was honest and exact in his dealings. He aided this place in its useful enterprise and did his hare in advancing interests of his community. He would not sacrifice the principals of truth and of honor for the sake of sinful pleasure and gain. He was careful not to offend his fellowman, young or old, by evil habits or wicked deeds. His conversation was of a strictly moral and becoming character. Following an injury he received by his horse falling on him he contracted pneumonia. In less that two weeks he passed away. Last Sunday morning he seemed to be in the best of spirits and asked that he might get up. However, he complained of his leg which was hurt at the time his horse fell on him. In less than an hour after cheerful conversation with friends his spirit had flown. He was born in Burke’s Garden August 31, 1876. He was married to MAMIE M. DAVIS, of Rural Retreat in 1904. To this happy union was born a son, GEORGE STEPHEN, who with his mother, survives his father. The deceased was the son of STEPHEN FOX, well known and loved citizen, widely connected with most prominent families. His mother preceded him to the grave several years. His father and two sisters-MRS. REPASS, of Tennessee and MRS. T. R. BOLING, of this place survive him. He was a member of the Lutheran church, a quiet and faithful Christian who knew his Lord and Saviour. He loved the Word of the Master and eagerly listened to the Word of Salvation. His life was such as to reflect his faith-the faith that made him serve God with his substance and his fellowship with his time and strength when a helping hand was needed. Proper services were conducted at the home and at the church by his pastor. A large number of friends followed the remains to the grave manifesting the love and esteem in which they held him. All miss him and are grieved over his departure. All are deeply touched to know that he was of such a kind disposition, so gentle in his behaviour, so devoted to his family, so faithful to his friends, is no longer with us here on earth. We rejoice, however, that we have every reason to believe he is now at rest with his sainted mother. "Come and let us return unto the Lord; For he hath torn and He will heal us; He hath smitten and He will bind us up." Submitted to the "Clinch Valley News" by R.
