She was born in Richlands and was a daughter of the late Harvey Peery Bailey and Molly Bandy Bailey, both Tazewell County natives. She was a life long resident of the Tazewell County area, attended Emory & Henry College and was a retired school teacher in the Tazewell County School System. She was a former member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell since 1998. She was a member of the Matt B. Martin Sunday School Class and Knight-Phillips Circle at the Main Street Church and was very active in many church activities especially the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. W.T. Hairfield; and two brothers, James B. Bailey and George P. Bailey. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn H. Burnette and husband, David A. of Tazewell; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Grim of Salem, Va.; and two grandchildren: Mr. R. Brooks Altizer Jr. of Blacksburg, Va.; and Miss Cary E. Altizer of Knoxville. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell with Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands. Pallbearers will be Michael Hymes, Martin Hymes, Aaron Hymes, Robert White, David Havens, Wayne Lester and William A. Peery. Friends may call at the Hurst- Scott Funeral Home in Richlands from 6 till 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
