Maxwell WHITEWOOD, Va. -- Mr. Milfred William Maxwell, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Whitewood and was a son of the late I.D. and Josie Cole Maxwell, both Buchanan County natives. He was a life long resident of the Whitewood area and was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railroad. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the John Ratliff American Legion Post in Grundy. He was also a member of the Baptist Bible Church in Whitewood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Harold, Bernard and Robert Maxwell; also a daughter-in-law, Joan Maxwell. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Gay Maxwell; three sons, Mr. Douglas Maxwell and wife Shelby of Whitewood, Mr. Eugene Maxwell of Rowe, Va., and Mr. Terry Maxwell and wife Shelia of Whitewood; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Drumheller of Richmond and Mrs. Juanita Tatum and husband Elmer of Whitewood; two brothers, Mr. Pierce Maxwell and wife Carol of Whitewood and Mr. Loyd Maxwell and wife Irene of Salem, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Shelby Maxwell of Whitewood, Mrs. Ruby Maxwell of Salem and Mrs. Mary Maxwell of Flint, Mich.; four grandchildren, Rusty Maxwell and wife Kristy, Brigette Maxwell, Brittany Maxwell and Emily Maxwell; five step-grandchildren; five step-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Pastor Andy Maynard officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Men of the Baptist Bible Church and Jimmy Goss will serve as honorary pallbearers. Members of the John Ratliff American Legion Post of Grundy will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call at the Hurst- Scott Funeral Home in Richlands from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Bible Church in Whitewood.
