MULLIN DIED THIS A. M. Expired Suddenly in Front of Central Hotel AUSTIN MULLIN, of Falls Mills, dropped dead in front on Central Hotel here this morning about 6:30. Mr. Mullin had been in town for several days in interest of a law suit which, it is said has given him a great deal of worry. He arose early this morning, and after taking a walk, returned to the hotel and sat down in a chair in front of the public room and fell over. Friends came to his side at once, and after examination found that he was dead. Mr. Mullins was a straight forward, upright citizen, and his sudden death is a shock to his large number of friends in the county. He was a relation of GRAT M. MULLINS Assistant Cashier of Tazewell National Bank. The cause of his death was pronounced heart trouble. "Clinch Valley News" Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday January 12, 1903 AUSTIN MULLIN MR. AUSTIN MULLIN’S sudden death, which occurred here last Friday morning, mention of which was made in our last issue deserves more than a brief notice. He came to Tazewell Wednesday on business which had been worrying him for some time. On Thursday night he was taken sick at the Central Hotel where he was stopping. He came down stairs and asked MR. GEO. SURFACE, the proprietor of the Hotel for some camphor, saying he had cramp colic, bud did not want a physician. After going back to his room Dr. Crockett was called in, and found him suffering a good deal, but left him better about eleven o’clock. On Friday morning he arose early, and walked out with Mr. Surface, and about half past five or six o’clock, came back to the Hotel and sat down in a chair in front of the Hotel, and talked for some time with Mr. Surface, who sat near him. He said that he felt well, and had slept soundly the night before. While sitting in his chair Mr. Mullins head dropped over on his chest, and Mr. Surface asked him if he was sick. He raised his head and looked up, and in a few moments he was dead, without a groan, or speaking a word. The remains were taken to Graham on Friday, to the home of his niece, MISS AMY MULLIN, and on Saturday were interred in the family ground, near Falls Mills, in presence of members of his family and (a) large number of friends. AUSTIN MULLIN was born in Pulaski County in 1833. He came to Falls Mills before the war, where he accumulated large property as a farmer and stock raiser. He was twice married. His first wife was a MISS ALLLISON, of Pulaski. His surviving wife, a MISS BARGER, and ten children, survive him. He fought through the war, a faithful Confederate soldier. He was honored and respected for his integrity and uprightness of character. [Austin Mullin, s/o William Mullin & Mary PHLAMER (sic) (whom I believe MIGHT have been kin to Samuel William Phlamner/Phlumer/Flummer., whose daughter, Mary Marhta Flummer married Daniel Tabor. Samuel William Flummer was listed as Samuel Phlamner when he was married to Elizabeth Peck in Montgomery Co., VA., in 1793. There were not many families that shared that surname, in the early history of Virginia. JUST FOR RESEARCH!). Austin was a brother of Joseph Mullin whom was married to Margaret Ann McDonald. Austin’s first wife was Sarah J. Allison and his second wife Christina E. Barger, d/o Jacob & America Barger. Austin and Sarah J. (Allison) Mullin’s son, William Frank Mullin, married Viola/Vista Lucinda ‘Betty’ Shrader in Bland Co., VA on 31 Aug 1881. Joseph Mullin & Margaret (McDonald) had a son, William F. Mullin whom married Mary Virginia Elizabeth Tabor, on 10 Jun 1875 in Tazewell Co., VA., d/o Charles Trigg Tabor & Harriett Harry. A brother of Austin Mullin, A Gordon Mullin married Henriettta Haynes on 7 June 1846 in Kanawha Co., VA/WV., they were married by Minister, Wm. Martin. However, I do not know if this was the brother of Austin & Joseph and the son of William & Mary Mullin. Also a Joseph Mullin married Minerva Williams on Dec 31, 1929 in Kanawah Co., VA/WV-kin, I do not know. Amy Mullin mentioned as the niece, in the June 12, 1903 article, was probably Cynthia AMY Mulli, d/o Joesph & Margaret Ann (McDonald) Mullin. Grat Mullin was Gratton Mustard ‘Grat’ Mullin s/o William F. Mullin & Mary Virginia Elizabeth Tabor, d/o Charles Trigg Tabor & Harriett Harry]. Now, this is the interesting item: Some say Wright Mullin went to Lee County Virginia. However, I think this MIGHT be the brother known as WRIGHT: "Tazewell County," page 34, by Louise Leslie John Wright Mullin, on May 8, 1848 was a party in a land transaction. This being a land deal between David and Mary E. Hall and John Wright Mullin, price-$150.00. Then on February 20, 1855, John Wright Mullin and his wife Sarah E., sold the same tract of land to Austin Mullin of Pulaski County, Virginia., for $700.00 Can anyone help me with this this-Karen EAGLE Moman: Was this John Wright Mullin, of the 1848 & 1855 land transaction and the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA., Census the brother, WRIGHT MULLIN, of Jacob & Austin, or was JOHN WRIGHT MULLIN a cousin? If this was their brother, Wright, he apparently went to Lee County., VA., after the 1850 Census and before the 1860 Tazewell Co., VA Census. In 1790 there are three MULLIN men in the Rockingham ., NC Census, Yes, NC. PATRICK MULLIN THOMAS MULLIN WILLIAM MULLIN Karen EAGLE Moman arizonaeagle@qwest.net April 2002
