William P. Puckett Obituary - Tazewell Co. VA BODY OF MARINE WHO DIED IN THE FAR EAST ARRIVES IN BLUEFIELD The Body of Private William P. Puckett, United States Marine Corps, who died in China, arrived in Bluefield Last night and was taken to the Hawkins Undertaking compay, Bland Street. Friends of the young man may view the remains at the undertaking establishment after 10 o’clock this morning. The body will remain there until 2:30 o’clock this afternoon when it will be removed to the Church of God, South street, where funeral services will be held. The casket will not be opened at the church. A Marine stationed at Mare Island, Calif., escorted the body from San Francisco to Bluefield. Following services at the church the body will be laid to rest in Monte Vista Park cemetery. A detachment from the Bluefield Howitzer company of the West Virginia national guard will provide a military burial ceremonial for the deceased sea soldier. The young man was the son of S. J. Puckett, Cumberland road. BODY OF MARINE TO ARRIVE MONDAY Funeral Services for William P. Puckett, Who Died In China February 8, Will be Held in Bluefield Tuesday. The body of William P. Puckett, 29, United States marines, who died at Peking, China, on February 8, is expected to arrive in Bluefield Monday night from San Francisco, where it was landed March 13. It was aboard the President Coolidge which sailed from the Orient on February 25. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of God, with the pastor, the Rev. W. D. McGraw, officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista cemetery. The Bluefield Howitzer Company of the West Virginia national guard will furnish a military escort to the cemetery and will fire a salute at the grave. The company’s musician will sound taps. Puckett, who was born in Tazewell, was a victim of influenza-pneumonia. He had served three years in the army, before enlisting in the marine eight years ago. Virtually all of his eleven years in the military service had been spent in China. Surviving are his father, S. J. Puckett, who resides just off the Cumberland road on East river mountain, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Rachel English and Mis Elliene Puckett, both of Los Angeles; S. W. Puckett, of Southton, Texas; Miss Elma Puckett and S. J. Puckett, Jr., both at home. Mr. Puckett’s mother died twelve years ago.
