Born in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Harrison and Melvina Bartley Ray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers. Mr. Ray is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vella Mae Alley Ray; one son, Ernest Ray of Glade Spring; two daughters, Ida Potter of Norton and Judy Jordon of Staunton, Va.; one stepson, Tim Alley of Cedar Bluff; one brother, Angle Ray of Grundy; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jim Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers will be Jackie Owens, Mike Proffitt, Stevie Lawson, Raymond Hayes, Lonnie Bailey and Doug Wells. The family will receive friends at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6-9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ernie Ray Medical Expense Fund, 913 Willow Springs Road, Cedar Bluff, VA 24609. Singleton Funeral Service is serving the Ray family.
