A VERY SAD AFFAIR On Thurday morning Sept. 28th, (should be Aug 28th), on Crane Creek, WALTER K. RUBLE, son of SAMUEL RUBLE, one of our near neighbors, was shot and instantly killed by union men or strikers. He walked out in company with another man before 7 o’clock, near the drift moutn (sic). to look around, as the strikers were soon in the vicinity the evening before, and was shot, four bullets striking him at once. They then robbed him, taking his watch , and gun belonging to the Coal Co. He had been working in the coal fields several years. [Son of Samuel A. Ruble & Lucy A. . A brother of Walter K. Ruble, Arch W. Ruble, Sr., married Lillie Mae Wagner , d/o Charles Alexander Wagner & Jane Annabelle ‘Annie’ Bailey. A sister, of Walter K. Ruble, Blanch ‘Bessie’ Ruble married Jeremiah Samuel ‘Jerry’ Tabor, s/o Elgin Whitley Tabor & Octavia Zane Tiller]. September 5, 1902 Submitted from Bailey, VA The corpse of one of our young men, MR. WALTER RUBLE, was brought home from the coalfields on last Thursday evening. He was said to have been killed on the morning of the same day of the strike.
