TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - C. Bascom Slemp, 7 Apr 1943 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- "Clinch Valley News" Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday, August 13, 1943 C. B. SLEMP C. Bascom Slemp, for 80 (sic) years a leader of the Republican party of Virginia, died in Knoxville, Tenn., last Saturday. While on his way to Big Stone Gap from a Florida resort, about ten days ago he was stricken of a cardiac ailment. Mr. Slemp retired from the political scene in 1932. He served as secretary for President Coolidge. He was 72 years of age, and a national committeeman, Seven before the United States entered the war, he issued a statement in which he commended President Roosevelt for his policy of aiding England in the war against England (sic-apparently it should have been Germany or Japan).
