Obituary of William H. Witten, 1923 - Tazewell Co. VA THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Tue., Dec. 18, 1923, p. 4, col. 3 [edited]. Tazewell, Dec. 14. - William H. Witten, aged 65 years, son of the late Colonel James R. Witten of Tazewell, and widely known throughout this section, died very suddenly yesterday morning at his home at Powellton [Brunswick County], where for the past five years he had been employed as superintendent of the Pine Coal Company. The deceased was a native of Tazwell County and had spent the greater part of his life in that section of Virginia. He had been closely identified with the development of the mining industry in Southwest Virginia and Southern West Virginia with various mining companies. He was one of the nineteen children born to his parents, who were among the most prominent people of Tazwell County and Southwest Virginia. Early in life he was married to Miss Margaret Whitley of Tazwell County. Besides his widow, he is survived by six children, three boys and three girls, they being Mrs. Walter M. Hoilman of Wytheville; Mrs. R. W. Johnson of Whitewood; Mrs. Spurlock Adkins of Jenkins, Ky.; Walter L. and John Witten, both of Powellton and Samuel Witten of Fairmont. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: E. H. Witten of Princeton; A. D. Witten of MARTINSVILLE, Va.; Mrs. J. M. Newton of Graham; Mrs. C. S. Kahle of Bluefield; Mrs. Francis J. Kelly of Bluefield; Mrs. Julia George, Tazwell; Mrs. W. W. Kelly and Miss Jennie Witten, both of Charlottesville, Va.; Mrs. H. F. Peery of Berdwind, and Robert Crockett of Missouri.
