Norfolk - Mrs. Mattie Hillard who died Sunday in a fire in her home at 634 E.
Princess Anne road, was given a funeral service Wednesday in Graves Funeral
Chapel. She was buried in Betty Jones Cemetery.

The fire was apparently started when a kerosene lamp overturned in the front
room of the victim’s first-floor apartment. Mrs. Hillard, who was believed to
have been over 80 years old and partially crippled was found in front of a door
leading to the outside of the house.

According to the fire investigator Capt. S. S. Cobb Jr., the woman suffered
burns over most of her body.

There are no known survivors in the Norfolk area.
