CABE Sunday, January 25, 1953 Newport News, Virginia, January 24 - A 38 year old Newport News fireman, complaining of chest pains while fighting an attic blaze in a two story frame structure, died almost an hour after being taken to a hospital, Saturday, January 24, 1953. The victim was the father of two, a former hipfitter and member of the department since 1945. He was a native of Swain County, North arolina. Damage to the structure was confined to the attic and attributed to careless smoking. ABE, after directing hose water from the outside, entered the structure, but soon returned and omplained, "I don't feel good." He was taken immediately to a hospital, treated, but failed to espond to revival efforts and died within 40 minutes after admittance. RHEE CALLOWAY (AA) Monday, February 9, 1953 18 Lives Lost in Texas Fire, Auto Collision - 9 Die as Farm House Burns; 9 Killed In Head-On Smash. Dallas, Texas, February 8 - Two separate tragedies - a fire and an automobile crash - took the lives of 18 persons in Texas, Saturday night, February 7, 1953. 9 persons were killed in each incident. 7 children and 2 adults burned to death when fire ravaged a flimsy East Texas farmhouse near Tyler. There were no survivors from the flames and there were no witnesses who could explain how the fire began in the three room dwelling. All the victims were Negroes. The farmhouse fire was discovered by a farmer of a nearby community when he passed along a country road. He notified the Lindale Fire Department as soon as he reached a telephone, but by the time firemen arrived, there was no chance of saving the house or any of its occupants. Dead in the fire were: (all AA) SUSIE HOLT, a woman whose age was estimated at between 90 and 100 years. EULA MAE THOMAS, 30, and her 2 daughters, BETTY, 9 and LAVERNE, 6 MABEL PETTY, 13 ROGER PETTY, 6 CLEMENTINE PETTY, 3 GAIL PATRICK, 3 RHEE CALLOWAY, 5 months old A head-on collision of two cars near Weatherford, 28 miles west of Fort Worth, killed 9 persons. One survived the wreck. All 6 occupants of one car - 3 men, 2 women and a 6 week old baby - were killed instantly as were 3 of the 4 Negro Soldiers who were riding in the other vehicle. The lone survivor is in critical condition. A native of Mulberry Grove, Hertford County, NC, he had resided in Norfolk half a century. He was retired by the Southern three years ago. CAMERON, Mrs. Sunday, December 9, 1906 Information has been received in this city announcing the death of the wife of former General Foreman JOSEPH CAMERON, of the Seaboard Air Line Railway. It occurred last week in Waycross, Georgia, where he has been located since he withdrew from the Seaboard's service in this city. RALPH HENRY CAMERON, Senator of Arizona Friday, February 13, 1953 Washington, February 12 - Who guided Arizona to Statehood and later became its Senator, died Thursday, February 12, 1953. The 89 year old Phoenix mining man, who obtained Statehood for Arizona while serving as the territory's delegate in Congress, was taken to Doctors Hospital here after he suffered a heart attack, Saturday, February 7, 1953 while on a business trip. He contracted bronchial pneumonia later. His wife was at his bedside, as she had been in a Phoenix hospital last October 21, 1952 when he underwent surgery on his 89th birthday. A daughter, CATHERINE CAMERON of Washington, DC, also survives. He was the last territorial delegate to Congress from the last territory to join the union. He was elected for a term from 1909 to 1911 but, it was extended a year by the presidential proclamation granting Statehood to Arizonain 1912. He returned to Congress for a 6 year term as Senator in 1921-1927. After leaving Congress, he engaged in mining operations in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and California. He lived in Los Angeles for a time, but returned to Arizona several years ago. His latest venture was development of a Hot Springs project in Yuma. He was a Republican. Born at Southport, Maine, his whole adult life was tied up with the West. He arrived in Arizona territory when he was 21 years old. ROBERT LEE CAMPBELL Wednesday, October 3, 1906 Bedford City, Va, October 2 - died last night at 11:00 in the home of his brother, Senator J. LAWRENCE CAMPBELL. He had been under treatment at Blue Ridge Springs for several weeks. He was brought here a few days ago, a very ill man. The end came suddenly and was a great shock to his friends. SARAH L. CAMPBELL, Miss Wednesday, February 11, 1953 Employed as an interviewer at the Virginia State Employment Bureau in Norfolk, died Monday afternoon, February 9, 1953 in a Norfolk hospital. A native of New Brunswick, New Jersey, she had lived here several years. She was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, of which her father, the late Rev D.Y. CAMPBELL, was pastor. ASA CANDLER Junior Monday, January 12, 1953 Atlanta, January 11 - Age 72, second son and namesake of the founder of the Coca Cola Company, died Sunday, January 11, 1953 after an extended illness. Candler was well known in his own right as a financier and industrialist. He had been in bad health since October, when he underwent an operation at Emory University Hospital here. After the operation, Candler returned to his Atlanta home for several weeks, but re-entered the hospital last Tuesday. His physician, Dr. VERNON POWELL said death resulted from a malignant condition. The family was at the beside. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. The wealthy business man was a big game hunter, aviation enthusiast, and a philanthropist. He attended Emory University, where he was a classmate of Vice President ALBEN W. BARKLEY. Candler helped his father pyramid the empire he built on Coca Cola and then fashioned a financial real estate empire of his own. When Candler interests sold the Coca Cola Company, Candler remained with the holding Company, ASA G. CANDLER, INC until 1928. Then he began acquiring his own real estate empire in Atlanta. Her husband, a former pastor of Memorial Methodist Church, Berkeley, now is social service secretary for the Wesleymen of Epworth Methodist Church. In her younger years, she was a college teacher. CARR (P) Friday, February 13, 1953 / Saturday, February 14, 1953 / Sunday, February 15, 1953 Age 69, one of the founders of the clothier firm of Carr, Mears and Dawson Inc, died unexpectedly at his residence, 1320 Cloncurry Road, Thursday, February 12, 1953 at 10:30 am. He was president of the firm until his retirement from business in 1948, having established the men's wear store with J. ALBERT MEARS and CARY L. DAWSON in 1909. Born in Whitaker, North Carolina on November 26, 1883, he was the son of MILES J. CARR and Mrs. REBECCA JANE JONES CARR. He received his early education at Moore's Academy in Whitakers and lived for a short time in Enfield, North Carolina before coming to Norfolk in March 1903 as a young man. Prior to organizing the firm of which he was president until he retired, he was employed with Hatch and Dean of Norfolk, a firm which pioneered in the manufacturing of Naval Officer's uniforms here. One of his business partners, DAWSON, also was an employee of the firm in those days. The firm of Carr, Mears and Dawson also specialized in Naval uniforms and through the years, he came to know many officers intimately as a result of the business contact. In the early days of World War II, before amphibious warfare became the science it is now, much of the initial planning took place at his home. Officers studying amphibious warfare and preparing plans for its use often retired to his porch and yard where they found the peace and quiet they desired. The amphibious base then was at the Nansemond Hotel and the Government Reservation at Ocean View. In 1948, when he retired, the clothing firm was taken over by new management with LARRY J. HARDIMAN JR, as president. At that time, as now, it occupied a three story building at 315 Granby Street, its fourth location since it was established. The firm established a branch store in Annapolis, Maryland in 1918, which also includes custom tailoring and Naval uniform departments as well as top lines of clothing, men's furnishings and haberdashery. He was a member of Epworth Methodist Church, the Princess Anne County Club, the Virginia Club and Owens Lodge 164, A.F. & A.M. He also was a member of the Retail Merchants Association of Norfolk and for many years, was an active member of the Norfolk Kiwanis Club. He received his early education at the Norfolk Academy and Maury High School; earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Military Institute in 1917 and served in the Army from 1917 until his retirement in 1931. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor in action. After his retirement from the Army, he entered the life insurance business and then was purchasing agent for a construction firm, manager of the warehouse at the Army Post Exchange, a life insurance agent and a real estate appraiser. He was a member of Christ and St Luke's Episcopal Church and the Princess Anne Country Club. He also was a member of the Masonic Order and of the Kappa Alpha college fraternity. He was one of the organizers of the Blue Cross hospitalization plan and a noted practitioner of neurosurgery since 1915. A graduate of the College of William and Mary (1898) and the Medical College of Virginia (1903), he began practicing general surgery in Richmond after graduate study at Polyclinic Hospital in New York City. He served in both World Wars, as a civilian and military specialist in neurosurgery. He also was the founder of the MCV Neurological Department (1919) and the University of Virginia Department (1937). He was associated with the Medical College for 42 years. COLLINS SR, also an architect and founder of the firm of T.J. Collins and Son here. Last year, he was winner of first prize for his plans for a State memorial for World War II. COSTON, Mrs. Friday, November 23, 1906 She was the widow of Captain HENRY H. COSTON, U.S.M.C., a resident of Portsmouth for many years, is dead in Pensacola, Florida. CRENSHAW Sunday, November 11, 1906 LODGING HOUSE SUICIDE AN ARMY SERGEANT. Richmond, Virginia, November 10 - The victim of the "Busy Bee" Lodging House tragedy was identified Friday night, November 9, 1906. The man who registered as R.H. HALL, Washington, DC was in reality R.L. CRENSHAW, a cavalry sergeant attached to Troop E, stationed at Fort Meyer. The dead man was identified by his wife and sisters. W.H. TAYLOR, the city coroner, believes that the man came to his death by accident and not design. The sergeant is inclined to believe that the man was intoxicated when he entered the room and that after turning out the gas, his hand accidentally struck the key, opening the pipe again. A flask of whisky was found in the room with the man. EUGENE AMORY CRIDER, Captain, United States Army (Retired) Wednesday, January 7, 1953 / Friday, January 9, 1953 Age 66, of 633 Connecticut Avenue, veteran of both World War I and II, who between the wars was affiliated with firms associated with maritime trade, died Monday, January 5, 1953 at 7:30 pm in a Norfolk hospital after an illness of six months. A native of Richmond, he had resided here most of his life and for awhile in Baltimore. His late parents were JOHN OSCAR and Mrs. ELSIE COOKE CRIDER. In the first war, he was a Lieutenant in the Engineers and in World War II, attained the rank of Captain. After his service in World War I, he became president of the Crider Maritime International Corporation and after World War II, he was manager for Maryland of the Virginia Stevedores Association. He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church, Owens Lodge 164, A.F. and A.M., Khedive Temple, the Cosmopolitan Club of Baltimore, the Baltimore Association of Commerce and the Reserve Officers Association. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. BETTY FRANCES CHRISTIAN CRIDER; 2 daughters, Mrs. ELSIE C. EWELL and Mrs. C. HOLLAND WOOD and a son, JOHN A. CRIDER of Norfolk; 4 grandsons and a granddaughter. CROWDER Wednesday, October 24, 1906 / Thursday, October 25, 1906 / Friday, October 26, 1906 The Mutual Relief Association of the United States Navy yard, Tuesday, October 23, 1906, tendered a check for $100.00 to Mrs. JOHN H. CROWDER, whose husband died during the morning while at work in the Portsmouth Navy yard. The check was presented within five hours after the sad event by the secretary of the organization, of which he was a member of the executive board. This speaks well for the organization, which was only organized a little more than a year ago at this yard among the workmen and has gradually grown in membership. He was a resident of South Portsmouth and died suddenly Tuesday, October 23, 1906 in the morning while at work in the joiner shop at the Navy yard. He was in apparent good health. He attended the meeting of the board of stewards of Wright Memorial Church on Monday night, October 22, 1906. On Tuesday, October 23, 1906, he left home, complaining of feeling badly. About 10:00 am, he was taken ill and died within a few minutes. He was a member of Grice Lodge, I.O.O.F. He leaves a wife and seven children. He was in the 50th year of his age. CROWDER, Mrs. Friday, January 4, 1907 Richmond, Virginia, January 3 - Died at Richmond, age was 38 years old. VERNON CRUMP Wednesday, November 28, 1906 / Thursday, November 29, 1906 Died Monday, November 26, 1906 at 6:40 pm, in his home, 1051 A Street, Park View. He was 41 years and 5 days old. He has been in business both in Portsmouth and Norfolk. About two years ago, his health failed. He left here for Colorado Springs. There he met Miss MAE WILLIAMS and married her. They remained there until about six months ago, when they returned to his old home. For awhile, he improved, later his health again gave way. On Monday night, November 26, 1906, death claimed him. He was a member of Tidewater Lodge, I.O.O.F. and Atlantic Lodge, K. of P., also Royal Arcanum and Modern Puritans. The funeral will take place Wednesday, November 28, 1906 at 12:30 pm from St John's Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev Mr. BROWN. CULLER Tuesday, October 2, 1906 Newport News, Va, October 1 - A Chesapeake & Ohio yard conductor, was crushed to death in the repair shop here, Sunday, September 30, 1906. His engine was shoving a car without a drawhead into the shop and it is said, waved his engines ahead while attempting to chain two cars together. He is survived by a widow and seven children. He was a native of Lynchburg and the body was shipped to that place Monday, October 1, 1906 for interment. He was 44 years, 4 months and 4 days. The funeral will take place Sunday, December 30, 1906 at 3:00 pm in the Culpepper home, 43 Court Street. The Rev R.B. GARRETT, pastor of the Court Street Baptist Church, will conduct the service. The remains will be conveyed to the Cedar Grove Cemetery, where interment will take place. The funeral will be the largest, perhaps, that has ever been held in Portsmouth. Nearly every fraternal and fire manic organization in which he held membership will turn out to pay the last tribute to his memory. Out of courtesy to the Chambers Fire Company No 2, which claimed him as its surgeon, the other fire and hook and ladder companies in the Portsmouth fire department will attend the funeral in an imposing body. It is expected, also, that prominent Arcanumites from up state will be present at the obsequies. Red Men, Heptasophs and Elks will also do honor to the dead. LOUIS CURDTS Tuesday, December 4, 1906 / Wednesday, December 5, 1906 One of the oldest and best known citizens of Norfolk, died at 3:00 pm Sunday, December 2, 1906 at his home, No 412 Pembroke Avenue, Ghent, at the ripe old age of 62 years. He was born in Germany, but had been a resident of Norfolk for 56 years, where for a long time he conducted the jewelry business, but later on was prominently connected with the Heptasophian and Norfolk Classified Building Associations, in the founding of which he took an active part. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Honor and was also a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be held from his late residence at 12:30 pm Tuesday, December 4, 1906 and will be conducted by Rev Dr JOSEPH RENNIE, of the First Presbyterian Church and Rev Dr. J.E.
