EASON Tuesday, October 9, 1906 Just as Detective PETTIS and Patrolman WEBB had brought him into the Second precinct police station Sunday afternoon, October 7, 1906, he keeled over and died. Death was due to Alcoholism. "Dead" appeared after his name on the police court docket Monday, October 8, 1906. The dead man was originally charged with drunkenness. "It's a sad case," said Captain CUTHRIELL, at the 2nd precinct station Monday night. "He was 51 years old, lived with his wife and 6 children at 81 High Street. He was a carpenter. His youngest child is but 6 weeks old and the family is in destitute circumstances. He had been on a spree of two months. It was his wife who sent for us to take him out of the house. She was afraid he would have delirium tremens. The officers had no sooner gotten him to the station when he died. The coroner was notified, but held no inquest. Death was due to alcoholism. The funeral took place Monday, October 8, 1906. the burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery. He was originally from North Carolina and had resided in Norfolk for 22 years. GEORGE F. EASON Wednesday, November 14, 1906 After an illness of more than ten months, a well known resident of Port Norfolk, died on Monday afternoon, November 12, 1906 in the 70th years of his age. He was a veteran of the Civil War and leaves, besides a wife and 5 children, 3 brothers to mourn his loss. His remains will be forwarded to his former home in Gates County, North Carolina, Wednesday, November 14, 1906 for interment. EATON Saturday, January 24, 1953 Washington, January 23 - Age 84, former representative, Republican, New Jersey, a long time champion of bipartisan foreign policy and former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, died Friday, January 23, 1953 in his Washington apartment. He had been in failing health for some time, decided not to seek re-election last November 1952 and completed 28 years of congressional service on January 3. He headed the Foreign Affairs Committee in the last Republican controlled Congress of 1947-48 and worked closely with the late Senator ARTHUR VANDENBERG, of Michigan, in striving for bi-partisan agreement on international relations. In 1945, he was a delegate to the founding conference of the United Nations and later he served as a United States delegate to the United Nations. Before entering Congress in 1924, he had been a prominent Baptist churchman and at various times, an editor, reporter, industrial relations consultant and shipbuilding consultant. Former President TRUMAN, informed at Kansas City of his death, paid this tribute: "He was a great Congressman, a good Baptist and a very good friend of mine." The tall, white haired man, whose views on foreign policy frequently were sought by the late President FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, won a reputation on Capitol Hill for his ability to resolve bitter debates with a well timed jest. He was succeeded as Representative of New Jersey's 5th District this month by PETER FRELINGHUYSEN JR, also a Republican. He was born in Nova Scotia, although he was descended from an old Massachusetts family. He became a naturalized citizen in 1895. A son and 5 daughters survive him. His wife died in 1948. A native of Guilford County, North Carolina. He retired in 1960 as principal of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. He was a graduate of Trinity College (now Duke University) and received his Master's Degree from Duke in 1928. He formerly taught at Asheville College, Western Carolina University and Duke University. He also was former superintendent of Schools in Waynesville Township, North Carolina. EDWARD MARTIN EDMUNDSON (P) Saturday, February 28, 1953 Age 14, of 315 Broad Street, Portsmouth, a student of Woodrow Wilson High School, died Thursday, February 26, 1953 at 11:45 pm in Maryview Hospital from a .38 caliber pistol wound in the left temple. According to a report filed by police, the youth was found at 9:45 pm on the rear porch of his home, a pistol beside him. Dr. C.O. BARCLAY JR, city medical examiner, viewed the body at the hospital and after performing an autopsy, withheld his verdict for further study. The youth, son of WILLIAM BENJAMIN EDMUNDSON and Mrs. MARGARET NOWLAND EDMUNDSON, was found slumped in a rocking chair on the rear porch of his home by his mother, with the pistol lying beside his right leg. The mother told police, according to Captain L.C. ELLIS, chief of the Detective Bureau of the Portsmouth Police Department, that she had reprimanded the boy earlier in the night for reportedly missing classes. She said she heard what she at first thought was the sound of a firecracker and upon investigation, discovered her son slumped in the chair on the rear porch. The youth was taken to Maryview Hospital in a police ambulance, but never regained conscience. The police investigation was handled by Lieutenant E.E. RICKETS and Officers F.S. SORRELL, E.M. BRYANT, J.P. MANZIONE, R.E. CORNWELL and GEORGE E. GARDNER. The youth was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and a member of the Broad Street Methodist Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. T.J. HENRY EDWARDS Thursday, October 4, 1906 (Don't know if Henry is the sons name or fathers) Suffolk, Virginia, October 3 - For killing his 7 year old son, of Isle of Wight County, he gets 16 years in state's prison. The trial lasted two days and a part of one night. He beat the boy with a club, using force such as a man would exert in killing a big snake. The boy was lacerated, bruised and broken to such extent that he soon died. During an appeal of J.U. BURGES, of the prosecution, he said EDWARDS ought to hang. "For God's Sake, don't hang him." shrieked his wife, who was in the rear of the court room. At the mention of hanging, EDWARDS feel from his chair and began praying, while his wife made such a demonstration that the judge ordered her taken from the court house. EDWARDS, Captain Wednesday, November 21, 1906 / Thursday, November 22, 1906 / Friday, November 23, 1906 / Wednesday, November 28, 1906 President of the Virginia Pilots' Association, founder of the Virginia Pilots Association and one of the pioneer pilots of the waters of Chesapeake Bay, died Tuesday night, November 20, 1906 at his residence, 25 Charlotte Street at 10:45 pm after a protracted illness. His life ran the span allotted to man, three score and ten years. His death was not unexpected, and he was surrounded by the members of his family and life-long comrades. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. He was the oldest pilot in the Virginia Association. For many years, he was an active member of the association and one of its leaders. He had headed the association for many years, as senior member. He was held in the highest esteem by his comrades and by the public in general. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. SARAH A. RAMSEY of Mills Rivers. A native of Cherokee County, where he was born on a farm September 3, 1854, he had resided in Asheville 20 years. He was 30 years old when he started his career as a showman and photographer. His was the first magic lantern to entertain folks over the rugged route between Asheville and Atlanta, Georgia during the early days. It was a lantern cranked by hand and illuminated with an oil light. When he first began using the "new fangled" motion picture machine, he traveled by train or buggy to remote points, staging shows at churches, school houses and auditoriums. He showed the first motion pictures at Canton, Waynesville, Bryson City, Sylvia, Murphy and other points. Hundreds of spectators lined the streets as the funeral cortege wound slowly from the exiled Queen's villa to the cemetery, where her body will lie in the family vault of her local physician, Dr. PAUL LAMARQUE, until a final burial site is chosen. J.B. ELLIS Sunday, October 7, 1906 Suffolk, Virginia, October 6 - His remains arrived in Suffolk today for transfer to the former home of the deceased near Sunbury, North Carolina. He met death on the rail at Sumter, South Carolina. The body was accompanied by A. SYDNEY FITCHETT, brother in law. The burial will take place Sunday, October 7, 1906 about three miles from Sunbury. He boarded the train at Sumpter, an Atlantic Coast Line train. His brother went with him to the station and said good bye. Some minutes later, a woman came running up the street saying some one was badly hurt. The brother, CHARLES ELLIS, went down to see who it was and found his brother dying. Death came before a sentence could be spoken. A coroner's jury said that he met death either by falling or jumping from the train. He had struck against a signal post. The skull was crushed and there were other injuries. He was probably leaning from the steps and leaned out too far. EVATT, Aviation Machinist's Mate Striker, US Navy Wednesday, January 14, 1953 A 20 year old sailor was killed early Tuesday morning, January 13, 1953 at the Naval Air Station when he walked into one of the whirling propellers of a loaded transport preparing to leave for Patuxent River, Maryland. He was of Mt Vernon, Missouri and attached to Air Transport Squadron 22. He had removed the landing gear locking pin in the nose wheel of the big four engine R5D "Skymaster" and had started for the left main landing gear. The accident happened about 3:20 am at the Fleet Logistic Airwing Terminal on the air station. He had been in the Navy 14 months and with the Norfolk based transport squadron since September 1952. California Highway Patrolmen investigating the parked car said he, who was attached to the motor vehicle pool at Travis Air Force Base, apparently pulled off the road Sunday night, December 13, 1953, attached a hose to the exhaust pipe of the car and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. There were no notes. He was not married. Surviving her are 3 daughters, Mrs. NANCY MAY HUDGINS of Fort McPherson; Mrs. MARGARET M. REDD of Norfolk and Mrs. HARRIETT S. ROGERS of El Paso, Texas; 5 sons, ROBERT T. EWELL, JESSE A. EWELL, WILLIAM B. EWELL and ELBERT H. EWELL of Norfolk and JAMES F. EWELL of Kansas City, Kansas; 1 sister, Mrs. R.L. RILEY of Gloucester and 17 grandchildren. Services will be conducted at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts Monday, December 7, 1953 at 11:00 am by the Rev P. ROWLAND WAGNER, pastor of Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers: WILLIAM THOMAS, ALBERT D. CREEKMORE, JOHN M. STAYLOR, J.W. WHITEHEAD, ANTHONY CATRIO and ROTHES STANLEY.
