EDWARD FORRESTER Thursday, October 4, 1906 (Please see the obit for GEORGE C. FORRESTER, Sunday, Monday, November 11, 1906. These two men are one in the same.) Newport News, Virginia, October 3 - Dying from thirst, with a bucket of water within a few feet of him, a veteran of the civil war and 72 years old, was found by a neighbor Monday night, October 1, 1906 at his home near Hampton. The old man was ill and too weak to walk. He had been famishing for want of water since Wednesday, September 26, 1906. Neighbors attempted to get him into the National Soldier's Home. Because he was not an inmate of the home at that time, admittance was positively refused. The veteran was removed to the Dixie Hospital, Hampton, where he died Wednesday night, October 3, 1906. The Home authorities declined to take charge of the body or to allow interment to be made in the National Cemetery on the ground that he had been discharged from the home. The old soldier was laid to rest in a plain pile box in the Potter's field. Since that time, it has been learned that the veteran left an uncashed pension check for $30.00. He is supposed to have owned the little house in which he dwelt. So it is probable the body will be exhumed and given a decent burial. The Elizabeth City County authorities state that they will make a complaint to the federal government in regard to the case. Sunday, November 11, 1906 Newport News, Virginia, November 10 - In accordance with an order from Quartermaster General CHARLES HUMPHRIES, the body, which was buried in Potter's Field of Elizabeth City County several months ago, was exhumed Saturday, November 10, 1906 and reinterred in the National Cemetery at the Hampton Soldier's Home. He was a veteran of the Civil War and at one time was an inmate of the home. Several months ago, he was found in a dying condition at his little home near Hampton. He was dying from thirst, being too weak to reach water a few feet from him. Ineffectual efforts were made to get the sick man in the Soldiers' Home Hospital and after he died, the Governor, Colonel KNOX, declined to permit the body to be buried in the cemetery on the ground that the man had not been an inmate of the home at the time of his death. Sheriff CURTIS, of Elizabeth City County, made complaint to Washington and the order to have the body exhumed and laid to rest in the cemetery was the result. Major SYLVESTER, superintendent of police in Washington, has written to Sheriff CURTIS, enclosing two pictures of the dead veteran and asking for particular concerning his death. GEORGE C. FORRESTER Sunday, November 11, 1906 (Please see the obit for EDWARD FORRESTER, Thursday, October 4, 1906.
