A native of Statesville, North Carolina, he had been associated with Reynolds Tobacco for 29 years when he retired in 1946. NORFOLK JEWELER SOUGHT HEALTH IN VAIN AT CLIFTON SPRINGS - FUNERAL TODAY. Died Sunday, November 18,1 906 at 12:15 am at Clifton Springs, New York in his 55th year. He was of Norfolk, Virginia. News of his death reached relatives Sunday night, November 18, 1906. He had been in Clifton Springs for some time in the hope of regaining his health. He was in declining health for two years. He was accompanied to Clifton Springs by his daughter, Miss LOUISE GALE, who was present when he died. The remains reached Norfolk, Monday night, November 19, 1906. they were accompanied by his daughter and Dr. JOSEPH A. GALE, a brother, who resides at Roanoke and who was summoned to his side Sunday, November 18, 1906. The funeral will occur Tuesday, November 20, 1906 at 3:30 pm from the Freemason Street Baptist Church, of which he was an active member for a number of years. The services will be conducted by Rev Dr. W.M. VINES, the pastor. He was a Norfolkian by birth, and spent his life in the city in mercantile pursuits. He was originally connected with the jewelry firm of Chapman & Gale, as early as 1876. Some years later, he entered business for himself and recently was a member of the large firm of Paul-Gale-Greenwood Company. He was successful in his business ventures and leaves quite a large estate. As a member of the Brambleton local board, before the Fifth Ward was admitted to the city, he was prominent in his advocacy of improvements for that section of the city and it was through his efforts, at least in part, that the thoroughfares were paved, curbed and otherwise improved. He was also a member of the Business Men's Association, the Retail Merchants' Association and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also identified with the Royal Arcanum and the Knights of Pythias. He is survived by 2 daughters, Miss LOUISE GALE and Miss BLANCHE GALE. His wife died about 15 years ago. He is also survived by 3 brothers, THOMAS GALE and J.D. GALE, residents of Norfolk and Dr. JOSEPH A. GALE of Roanoke. GARBER Thursday, December 3, 1953 Harrisonburg, December 2 - Age 74, a prominent figure in Rockingham County political, religious, business, educational and civic circles for 45 years, died at his home north of here Wednesday, December 2, 1953. He had been ill for some time, but had become strong enough to be removed from Rockingham Memorial Hospital Tuesday, December 1, 1953. A Republican leader in the county, Shenandoah Valley and State, he had served as a member of all the high councils of the party. He had served one term in Congress, being a representative of the Seventh Virginia District. He also had served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and the State Senate. He was Rockingham County treasurer for 5 years. He also was connected with the United States Internal Revenue Bureau at Richmond for 4 years. He was a staunch supporter of his alma mater, Bridgewater College and played a leading role in its development. He was in charge of the publication of two volumes of a history of the Church of the Brethren Institution. He was also active in the Church of the Brethren and served for a number of years as president of the Rockingham Sunday School Association, one of the original sponsors of the statewide program of weekday religious education classes in the public schools. He attended Emerson College and Wells Memorial Institute at Boston after being graduated from Bridgewater. He was a gifted orator, being frequently called on to make addresses at all kinds of public gatherings. He introduced his late friend, Senator ROBERT A. TAFT, when he addressed a big Republican rally here in 1952. He served 2 years as director of the Rockingham Turkey Festival. He was the first cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Bank at Timberville and remained a director of that North Rockingham financial institution. He was one of the leaders in the construction of a new home of this bank this summer. He is survived by his widow, the former LUCY WINFIELD HITE of Lunenburg County. He was 78. He was active in the development of North Carolina's horticultural industry for nearly 50 years, heading N.C. State's department of horticultural science for 25 years. He organized the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen in 1936, the North Carolina Commercial Flower Growers in 1947, and the North Carolina Apple Growers' Association in 1954. In 1937, he began the movement that resulted in the first direct appropriation for agricultural research ever made by the General Assembly. He also wrote a column for weekly newspapers in the state for the past 20 years. A native of Blacksburg, Virginia, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the Army Air Corps in World War 1. Before coming to North Carolina State, he held positions at the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and Clemson University. He came to North Carolina in 1927. GILMER of Richmond, died here Monday morning, December 28, 1953 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.B. LYNCH. She had been blind since 1947 and bed-ridden, dictated letters to aid a mail funds drive to rebuild Lebanon's Methodist Church after it was destroyed by fire last year (1952). She was a pioneer public school teacher in Russell County. A graduate of the old Martha Washington College in Abingdon, she taught in the old Lebanon Academy here. She was married to VINCENT B. GILMER, one time deputy clerk and later treasurer of Russell County. Her brother was the late Judge JOSEPH KELLEY, judge of the Bristol, Virginia Corporation Court and later Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Survivors other than her son and daughter, is another son, TURNER A. GILMER, president of the First National Bank of Lebanon; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. GLENN Sunday, November 4, 1906 Raleigh, North Carolina, November 3 - Governor GLENN arrived home Saturday, November 3, 1906 from Macon, Georgia. He left the bedside of his brother there Friday afternoon, November 2, 1906. The physicians advised him that though there was no hope of recovery, his brother was not in immediate danger. As it was on the eve of election and some trouble might occur here, the governor was asked to return to North Carolina. Within an hour after his return here, a telegram announced his brother's death. He was 46 years old and born in Rockingham County, this state, married Miss MARY PEMBERTON of Fayetteville and moved to Macon, where he was connected with the Central of Georgia Railway. His death is the fourth in the governor's family during his term, including his brother, who was his private secretary; the wife of EDWARD GLENN, a brother of Governor GLENN's wife, who died in the far west and whom she had not seen for 30 years, and now EDWARD GLENN, the youngest and the last of the governor's brothers. At the time, his wounds were not supposed to amount to much. Later he grew worse and on Saturday, September 29, 1906, he died. Saturday night, September 30, 1906, Justice PEED held an inquest and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death from a blow struck by JOE GOODMAN on the spinal column, causing death. THOMAS MCMILLAN GRANT, Doctor Thursday, January 1, 1953 Rocky Mount, NC, December 31 - Age 66, secretary of the North Carolina Methodist Conference since 1925 and pastor of the First Methodist Church here since 1947, died Tuesday night, December 30, 1952. Death apparently was caused by a heart attack in his sleep. Dr. Grant had been a Duke University trustee since 1933 and for several years was a trustee of Carolina and Louisburg colleges. He was presiding elder of the New Bern district in 1932 - 1936, superintendent of the Elizabeth City district in 1941 - 1942 and superintendent of the Rocky Mount district in 1942 - 1947. He was born at Wilmington, July 28, 1886, the son of the late REUBEN and ELIZABETH MCMILLAN GRANT. He received the AB degree from Trinity College, Durham, in 1909 and the honorary D.D. degree from High Point College in 1943. He was ordained as a minister in 1913 after having been junior preacher at Duke Memorial Church, Durham, in 1909 - 1910. He had held pastorates at Leasburg, North Gates, Hillsboro, Hookerton, Hertford, Lumberton, Wilson and Greenville. CHARLES MARSHALL GRAVES Sunday, December 28, 1952 Richmond, Virginia, December 27 - Age 78, a former Richmond newspaperman and a pioneer in wire photograph development, died in Atlantic City, New Jersey Friday, December 26, 1952 while on a Christmas visit from his home in New York City. He retired in 1941 as general manager of World Wide Photos, Inc., formerly the New York Times World Photos. He served on the New York Times for 34 years and was a newspaperman for 45 years. He was born in Charles City County and was a direct descendant of Captain THOMAS GRAVES, who settled at Jamestown in 1608. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Richmond College in 1896 and joined the staff of the Richmond Times as a reporter that year. In 1907, after serving as city editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch, he became telegraph editor of the New York Times and the next year switched to a city reporter.
