The charred torso, age 38, was found among the charred rubble Saturday, December 26, 1953. He had visited the CARROLL's earlier in the evening. "....I thought he had gone home," CARROLL said. CARROLL said his wife had gone to bed and he was sitting by the fire. ".....The whole ceiling fell and fire burst out everywhere." CARROLL said, "I thought he had gone to bed and he was sitting by the fire." CARROLL said HALE often spent the night at his house and it would not have been unusual for him to return after leaving earlier in the evening. Identity of the torso was established by Dr. RUSSELL B. SIMON HALSEY (AA) Thursday, October 11, 1906 He met his death at a lumber camp at Juniper, North Carolina at which place the East Lake Cedar works is getting out timber. The remains were brought to this place on the steamer Alma Thursday, October 11, 1906. He has a large bullet hole in his temple. Some say he was one of a party of three Negroes who went to that place on Tuesday, October 9, 1906. From reports, it seems that he "held up" one of the workmen and demanded that he give up a $5.00 note seen in his possession, emphasizing his demands by flourishing a six shooter pistol in close proximity to his vitals and discharging the weapon twice to let his victim know it was in working order. He dug up the river. The Negro who had been held up, went to the commissary and bought a shot gun, so it is said, and loaded her with "slugs". Shortly afterwards, he came up with HALSEY, demanding that he return the $5.00 note. HALSEY paid no attention and turned away without saying a word, thereupon, this unknown Negro raised the gun and fired, the entire load taking effect in his head near the left temple. Death resulted. Coroner I. FEARING empaneled a jury. The jury has not yet returned a verdict. SAMUEL TYLER HAND Saturday, November 17, 1906 / Sunday, November 18, 1906 / Tuesday, November 20, 1906 A life long resident of the city, died Friday, November 16, 1906 at 5:22 pm in his home at 600 Chesnut Street. His brief illness was known but little in his wide circles of acquaintances and his death will be a surprising announcement to them. A widow and 4 small children survive him. He was 61 years and 18 days, in the 62nd year of his age, a retired marine engineer, who acquired considerable property early in life. These acquisitions together with his industriousness made him quite well to do and enabled him to retire from active labor about seven years ago. The Old Dominion Steamship Company claimed his services for many years and in the course of duty with the steamers of the line he acquired new friends daily. To his popularity may be attributed a genial disposition and a big heart, which endeared him as a lifelong friend to all with whom he came in contact. The Mason, Elks, and Pythians will mourn his loss, as he held membership for many years in each of those organizations. The funeral will take place in the late residence Sunday, November 18, 1906 at 3:00 pm and will doubtless be one of the largest ever held in this city. He was born in Warren, Massachusetts, October 29, 1845 and was the son of SAMUEL T. HAND and LOIS C. CURTIS HAND. His father was a man of splendid business sagacity and for more than half a century, served as superintendent of roads and bridges of the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad. He left his native state and located in Portsmouth in 1848. The following year, he entered the service of the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad as one of its officials. The deceased attended Webster Collegiate Institute in Portsmouth, and after leaving school, entered the machine shop here, where he served a three years' apprenticeship. He then went to Wilmington, Delaware and worked one year in the marine machine shop at that place. Later, he served for some time as Third Assistant Engineer in the United States Navy. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company D, 9th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. In a short time, he was discharged for disability. He returned to the service, however, entering the Navy, from which he resigned in 1865. He spent some time in the shops of the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad. He was soon promoted to an engineer and was placed in charge of a locomotive. A little later, he was transferred to one of the railroad company's boats, where he also served as engineer. Severing his connection with that company, he entered the service of the Pioneer Line and later the Old Dominion Steamship Company, where he had remained for a period of 27 years. He finally resigned his position with the company in May, 1900. Since 1866, he had been chief engineer in the merchant marine. He has been married twice. In his long and eventful service on ocean going steamships, he had many interesting experiences, his duty calling him to Chesapeake Bay Ports, the North Carolina Sounds and the Caribbean Sea. He frequently visited Cuba during his life afloat. He had a 1,400 acre farm in Southampton County which he personally supervised. He took little interest in politics. But in social circles, it was different. Like his father, he was a Mason and advanced to the rank of noble of the Mystic Shrine, a member of the Acca Temple, Richmond. He also affiliated with the B.P.O. Elks and the Knights of Pythias. The members of Atlantic Lodge, Knights of Phythias and Portsmouth Lodge, B.P.O. Elks, are requested to meet Sunday, November 18, 1906 at 2:00 pm to attend the funeral. Perhaps the largest attendance at a funeral in many a day marked the last tribute paid to his memory. The Knights of Pythias, Elks, Knights Templar and a vast outpouring of citizens assembled at the Hand residence. Rev W. AMBROSE BROUN, rector of St John's Protestant Episcopal Church, conducted the services, paying tribute to the character of the deceased. The organizations of which he was a member - Portsmouth Commandery Knights Templar, Seaboard Lodge No 56, A.F. & A.M., Atlantic Lodge No 24, Knights of Phythias and Portsmouth Lodge, B.P.O. Elks, were all represented. The remains were conveyed to the Oak Grove Cemetery, where interment took place. Many testimonials of the esteem in which he was held were sent in the shape of handsome floral designs. The following were pallbearers, selected from the various organizations of which he was a member. Seaboard Lodge A.F. & A.M.: F.D. GILL, D.A. WILLIAMS, Portsmouth Commandery, K.T.: JOHN W. RUTTER, JOHN W. BARCLAY, Portsmouth Lodge, B.P.O.E.: CHARLES B. LASH, J.W. O'ROURKE, Atlantic Lodge, K. of P.: E.S. ANDERTON, M.D. BROWNLEY, Citizens: WILLIAM G. W. PARKER, JOHN W. OAST. STEVE HANNAGAN, Press Agent Friday, February 6, 1953 Nairobi, Kenya, February 5 - Press agent noted for pioneering the lavish use of bathing beauty copy, was found dead of a heart attack in his hotel here Thursday, February 5, 1953. He was 53. He started as a newspaper reporter in his home town of Lafayette, Indiana at 14, flew here Tuesday, February 3, 1953 to advise on Coca-Cola sales methods in this East African colony. He complained of not feeling well when he arrived and a doctor was called. ROBERT RUARK, an American columnist now in Nairobi, telephoned him Wednesday night, February 4, 1953. He declined an invitation to join RUARK over a social drink, saying he still was not feeling well. He was found slumped on the bathroom floor Thursday morning, February 5, 1953 when a doctor called. Plans were made to fly the body to the United States for burial. Three of his most noted exploits were in promoting Miami Beach, Florida; Sun Valley, Idaho and the 500 mile automobile race at Indianapolis, Indiana. Employed by the City of Miami Beach, he flooded newspaper offices with pictures of Winter time bathing beauties posing in the sun of Florida. The city paid him $25,000 a year for his services and considered it money well spent. When W. AVERELL HARRIMAN was board chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad, he sent HANNAGAN to Sun Valley to promote the area as a Winter ski resort. The public soon became familiar with the place as a spot where you could sun bathe in the snow. Handling publicity for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was one of his first jobs. He became director of publicity in 1919. His clients included many celebrities in the sports and entertainment world and large industrial organizations. Among them were GAR WOOD, the speed enthusiast, GENE TUNNEY, JACK DEMPSEY, Owens-Illinois Glass Company, Olin Industries, Electric Auto-Lite Company, Admiral Corporation and Thor Corporation. In recent years, he had been a frequent companion of ANN SHERIDEN, the movie actress, causing considerable romantic speculation. In Hollywood, Miss SHERIDEN said her personal loss and feelings are extremely deep'. Friends said the actress was all broken up' by the news of his death. She plans to fly to New York for the funeral. MARY ROSALIE MCELROY HANNAN, Mrs. Friday, October 17, 1947 Widow of MICHAEL C. SAMUEL HASKINS Tuesday, December 11, 1906 (His surname was also spelled HOSKINS) Suffolk, Virginia, December 10 - Almost in the shadow of the Christian Church at Crittenden, Virginia and nearly at the hour of last midnight, Sunday, December 9, 1906, he was stabbed in the heart by JOHN HENRY HARRISON. A long butcher knife was the weapon used. He died on his feet and while running. With the remnants of his fast fleeting strength, he ran a 100 yards or more. There was in his right hand a large pocket knife. It was open. It was with this weapon that he had aimed to defend himself against the long, keen edged butcher knife in the hands of a maddened man. There are two theories as to the cause of the killing: HASKINS, about 10:30 pm Sunday, December 9, 1906, was heard prowling about HARRISON's premises. There was a noise of contact with the wire fence and there was heard a grating sound against the house. HARRISON heard and hailed. There was no responsive voice to come out of the darkness. HARRISON told his father to bring a light. He did. Then HASKINS was recognized. HARRISON began the attack right there in his own yard. He picked up a wooden bar and hit HASKINS twice on the head. HASKINS ran. HARRISON then secured the butcher knife and went in pursuit. HASKINS was overtaken near the church. After some words of warmth, during which HASKINS is said to have drawn his pocket knife, HARRISON, with a supreme effort and a well aimed blow plunged the blade of his knife in the left breast of his victim. It entered a little above the heart. HARRISON was not hurt. HARRISON says HASKINS was on the premises for the purpose of larceny, but according to official information received tonight, there is another theory. HARRISON did not try to escape the legal consequences of his act. He made no effort to run away, but rather courted arrest. He was taken in custody Monday, December 10, 1906 by Constable W. JASPER COTTON. Mr. COTTON lives some miles from the scene and Monday morning, December 10, 1906 was en route to seek HARRISON when he met the latter driving towards Chuckatuck in order to give himself up. The inquisition was conducted by Acting Coroner CHARLES F. PINNER, at Chuckatuck Monday afternoon, December 10, 1906. Dr. LESLIE ELEY performed the autopsy. The following were members of the coroner's jury: T.F. FIELDS, G.A. ARCHER, A.B. BINGLEY, J.H. BROUGH, W.C. MOGER and J.E. MAYO. A verdict in accordance with the facts was rendered and HARRISON was held without bail for the homicide. He was lodged in the Nansemond County jail Monday night, December 10, 1906 by Constable COTTON. Wednesday, December 12, 1906 Suffolk, Virginia, December 11 - The man who on Sunday night, December 9, 1906 was stabbed to the heart in the shadow of the Christian Church at Crittenden, Virginia by JOHN HENRY HARRISON, was buried Tuesday, December 11, 1906. In the meantime, HARRISON, remains in jail awaiting indictment by the grand jury. He apparently is not fearful of the outcome of his trial. HERBERT D.
