EDWARD WILSON JAMES Tuesday, October 23, 1906 He was found dead in a room of the old James residence, 62 Fenchurch Street Sunday, October 21, 1906 and was buried Monday afternoon, October 22, 1906. He had been missing since the 11th of October, 1906 and it is supposed that his death, which was due to accidental asphyxiation, occurred on that date. When found, the body was sitting in a chair beside a desk in a room which he had used as office and study for many years. He was a very wealthy man. His estate being estimated to be between $250,000 and $400,00. He lived a life of quiet leisure, devoting his time mainly to literature and historical study. He was a member of the Virginia Club, the Westmoreland Club, of Richmond and clubs in Baltimore and other cities. Up to about 12 years ago, he lived in the house where his death occurred. The old colonial mansion was formerly the Tunstall Home and was in the then aristocratic section of Norfolk. It was purchased about the time of the Civil War by JOHN JAMES, father of the deceased and a prominent merchant of this city. JOHN JAMES dropped dead in the same room where his son was found dead. After the death of JOHN JAMES, EDWARD JAMES and 2 of his sisters lived in the house. The Misses JAMES were types of southern womanhood, though they in no way entered into the social life. On the contrary, their exclusiveness was noticeable. They always went out together, attired in the quaint black silk gowns of the period. When one of them died, the other continued to reside with her brother, and maintained the old house in its former air of seclusion. One year, the surviving sister went on a visit to Baltimore and died there. Since that time, the house has not been occupied save as a study by Mr. JAMES. While few people entered it in previous years, after the death of Miss JAMES, practically no one crossed its threshold except EDWARD JAMES. JOE WRIGHT and his wife, ARA, have lived in the kitchen during all these years and JOE WRIGHT told a Virginian-Pilot reporter, he had only been in the house three times. His wife would clean Mr. JAMES study, but the other rooms have been allowed to remain exactly as they were when the last Miss JAMES left them. He did his writing in the downstairs room, to the left of the entrance. At times, when callers would come on business, he conversed with them at the front door. When he entered the house, he would lock himself in. If he were going away on a visit to other cities, as he frequently did, he would summon JOE WRIGHT to the door and bring his satchel there for the Negro to carry to the car. And, after passing so much of his time alone in the old house, he died there alone. The periods he lived in Norfolk, he lived at 467 Duke Street, the home of the GRANBERRY Family, his relatives. Being in and out of the city frequently, his absence since October 11th was not noticed by his friends. ARA WRIGHT, the serving woman, remarked to her husband on the 12th that Mr. JAMES had gone away without telling her where he was going so that she might have his mail forwarded to him, as was his custom. That was all. Several days passed an offensive odor became noticeable about the house. JOE WRIGHT and his wife thought some rat or other animal died in the basement or yard. A search of the yard failed to reveal anything and the man hesitated entering the basement on account of its owner's objections to anyone going in the house. Sunday morning, October 18, 1906 however, he determined to do so. His visit located the source of the odor in his office. He put a ladder beneath the front window of the room and broke a slat in the blind. A horrible sight met his gaze and he hurried around to Underhill's pharmacy, Church and Cove Streets, to notify Mr. UNDERHILL of the case. The druggist, who had been a life long friend of Mr. JAMES informed the police. Patrolman BRENNAN was sent around to the house. He forced an entrance. The dead body was seated in a chair. A few feet away from it, was a gas stove and a slowly leaking jet told the cause of death. On a desk beside the body was the manuscript of a partly completed history of Norfolk and Norfolk County. It is thought that he was engaged in writing and was gradually suffocated at his desk. He was born in this city in 1848 and graduated from Roanoke College. His early life was passed in business with the firm of James, Smith & Bro. and with his father. Upon the death of his father, JOHN JAMES, he retired from active business and took up literature, history and archaeology. In the last named study he achieved a wide reputation. For many years, and up to his death, he had edited and published the Lower Norfolk County, Virginia Antiquary. This was his pet hobby. The magazine was never for sale, but was circulated among libraries and people who would appreciate its great value. Only recently, upon request, he presented the New York Library with a handsomely bound file of the publication. He was an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, this unusual honor having been conferred upon him by the chapter at William and Mary College on account of his valuable works in literature and history. For many years, he had been a director of the Norfolk Public Library and in respect to his memory, that institution was closed Monday, October 22, 1906. The funeral Monday afternoon, October 22, 1906 was conducted from the apartments of H.D. Oliver, the Rev ROBERT GATEWOOD officiating at the ceremonies in Cedar Grove Cemetery, where the interment occurred. The body was borne by 8 Negroes and the honorary pallbearers were: H.B. BAGNALL, Colonel WM. LAMB, LYON G. TYLER of Williamsburg, W.H. SARGEANT SR, W.W. VICAR, C.F. UNDERHILL, Judge W.H. BURROUGHS, Dr. R.B. KENNON, R.H. BAKER SR, F.H. ROBINSON, Major C.W. GRANDY, Judge J.M. KEELING, JOHN N. VAUGHAN, JOHN B. JENKINS, Captain B.P. LOYALL and ROBERT M. HUGHES. After the finding of the body Sunday, October 18, 1906, a coroner's inquest was held, and the following verdict was rendered: "We, the jury, find that the said EDWARD JAMES, came to his death by accidentally being asphyxiated at No 62 Fenchurch Street." WILLIE JENKINS Wednesday, January 2, 1907 Because of the many conflicting and inaccurate stories in circulation regarding the sad accident which occurred at the home of JOHN B. JENKINS Saturday morning, December 29, 1906 resulting in the death of one of his children, Mr. JENKINS has given to the Virginian-Pilot a correct account of the affair. In doing this, Mr. JENKINS says he wishes the public to understand that the little boy who fired the revolver was not looking at his brother, but was looking out of the window at the time and pulled the trigger unconsciously. He feels that such an explanation will make lighter the heavy burden of sorrow which the living brother is bearing. In describing the affair, MR. JENKINS said: "My elder son had been confined to the house Saturday, December 29, 1906 the day of the accident on account of a cold. He called WILLIE from the street in front of my residence to the boys room on the third floor. My elder son had a self cocking pistol in his hand and was looking out of the front window at WILLIE's friends playing games on the street and the pistol was discharged without his being aware that he had been dreaming and turning quickly, he saw WILLIE's eyes fixed on him with a surprised look and realizing what had happened, he caught WILLIE as he fell and called his mother who was on the second floor. Rushing upstairs, she found WILLIE in the arms of his brother, who was trying with his hand to stop the flow of blood from the bullet hole in the side of his head." (New Orleans papers please copy) NEIL JOHNSON (AA) Tuesday, November 20, 1906 / Wednesday, November 21, 1906 He fell victim to the gun of County Officer CHASE Monday, November 19, 1906 after 7:00 pm at London and Godwin Street and a brother of his lies at the home of his mother with a bullet wound in his leg near the hip. According to the best information obtainable, those in position to know refusing to talk for publication, County Officer J.O. CHASE entered Legum's Bar and Grocery at the northwest corner of London and Godwin Street with a warrant for JOHNSON, on the charge of stealing a coat valued at $15.00. Placing JOHNSON under arrest, he started for Justice BUNTING's office, just a block away. After reaching the opposite corner, CHASE heard someone approaching from the rear and turned just in time to prevent being hit by JOHNSON's brother, WILLIAM. In turning, CHASE released NEIL JOHNSON, who also struck him. Finding himself attached from both sides, CHASE brought his gun in action and put a bullet in NEIL JOHNSON's neck, killing him almost instantly. Turning to resist a blow from WILL JOHNSON, who continued the attack, a second shot was fired, striking WILLIAM JOHNSON in the hip. Justice BUNTING summoned a coroner's jury. After viewing the remains, adjournment was taken until Tuesday night, November 20, 1906 at 7:30 pm, when they will meet at the office of Justice BUNTING to hear all of the witnesses. After hearing all the evidence regarding the shooting at London and Godwin Streets on Monday, November 19, 1906 by County Officer J.O. CHASE, the jury rendered a verdict to the effect that he came to his death from a pistol wound and fully exhonorated Officer CHASE from all blame. According to the evidence brought before the jury, the action of Officer CHASE in firing when he did was found to be justifiable, as he was being attacked by both men, one of whom was a prisoner at the time. The condition of WILLIAM JOHNSON, who was shot in the hip during the trouble, was said to be about the same Tuesday night, November 20, 1906, no serious change having taken place. OSA JOHNSON (P) Thursday, January 8, 1953 New York, January 7 - 58 year old author and explorer who with her late husband, MARTIN JOHNSON, filmed wild animals and natives in many remote parts of the world, died Wednesday, January 7, 1953. She was found dead in her hotel suite by her attorney, who said she had been preparing to make another safari in Africa in about six weeks. The attorney, JOHN CRANE, said she had been working day and night in preparation for the trip and probably "just worked herself out." She apparently died of a heart attack, in a two-hour interval between a chat with a hotel maid and the attorney's visit. Her famous husband died in an airplane crash in California in 1937 and she was badly hurt in the accident. But she gave more than 1000 lectures from a wheelchair and later recovered from her injury, a shattered knee, to make another trip to Africa in the mid-1940's with a movie company on location. Two years after his death, she secretly married a booking agent, CLARK H. GETTS and in 1941, the marriage was publicly solemnized by New York's late Mayor FIORELLO LA GUARDIA. She got an uncontested divorce from Getts in Chicago in 1949 with permission to resume the name Johnson. She was born OSA HELEN LEIGHTY at Chanute, Kansas and is survived by her mother, Mrs. RUBY ISABEL LEIGHTY of Chanute. She was only 16 when she married Johnson and once said she had expected to settle in Chanute and "grow a couple of kids and a vegetable garden." Instead, she made countless jungle trips with him, helped film 17 movies, lectured and collaborated with him on many books about wild life. They began flying in 1932 and flew 60,000 miles over all sections of Africa. In later years, she estimated she had traveled about a million and a half miles during her career. Their first expedition in 1912, only two years after their marriage, took them to the South Seas. Later they explored and photographed natives and animals in the Solomons, New Hebrides and Boreneo. Between 1921 and 1934, they made five trips into the African jungles and after another trip to Borneo in 1935 and 1938, returned to East Africa in 1937 to head an expedition making the film "Stanley and Livingston". Her books with Johnson, many of which became movies, included "Cannibal Land", "Lion", "Camera Trails in Africa", "Safari - A sage of the African Blue", "Congorilla" and "Over African Jungles". On her own, she wrote "I Married Adventure", "Four Years in Paradise" and a number of children's books about jungle animals. After Johnson's death, she became head of Martin Johnson Pictures, Incorporated, and produced several more films. RALPH L.
