ELIZABETH KENNY, Sister Monday, December 1, 1952 Sydney, Australia, November 30 - She will be buried Monday, December 1,1952 in the heart of the bush country area where she worked out her world famous methods of treating infantile paralysis. The 68 year old nursing sister died at her hilltop Toowoomba home Sunday, November 30, 1952 after a week long battle against cerebral thrombosis. For two days, she had been in a coma from the brain blood clot. Pneumonia hastened her end. The determined and courageous woman, who was credited with saving many from the dreaded crippling of poliomyelitis, spent her last days with her right side paralyzed and unable to talk. Physicians last night administered a new drug, trypsin, in a last minute effort to save her life. A pacific airliner bringing the drug from the Jewish Memorial Hospital in New York made a special stop at Brisband, 85 miles from Toowoomba, to hasten the drug to her bedside, but it was too late. The services will be held at the Neil Street Methodist Church, Toowoomba. She will be buried in Nobb Cemetery, 12 miles from Toowoomba in the plateau country in which she rode horseback to treat suffering humanity. Government, universities and private organizations in many parts of the world have honored her for her polio therapy methods. She was a stubborn woman and had many a battle with doctors who disagreed with her theories. She discovered the now famous "Kenny Treatment" when she was a 25 year old nurse in the bush country. Her patient was a 2 year old child. She telegraphed a description of the disease to the late Dr. AENEAS J. MCDONNELL, her former teacher and employer. He wired back: "Infantile paralysis. No known treatment. Do the best you can." She ripped up a woolen blanket, dipped the strips in boiling water and applied them to the painful parts of the child's body. She treated the child's muscles. The child revived to walk again. Doctors were incredulous. She ran afoul of organized medicine in Australia when she established clinics. She went from one setback after another to triumph finally. Her treatment was recognized and foundations bearing her name were set up to carry on her work in the United States and other countries. Tributes poured in from state and church. Acting Prime Minister Sir ARTHUR FADDEN praised her "confident approach"and "her tenacity of purpose which made her a great international figure." Opposition Leader HERBERT V. EVATT, former president of the United Nations Assembly, said: "On several occasions President ROOSEVELT, himself a polio victim, told me that her method's of treatment had proved very beneficial in thousands of cases throughout the United States, including his own. The Church of England, Bishop of Brisbane, the Rt. Rev Dr R.C. HALSE, said: "She left behind an example of devoted service towards the cause of alleviating suffering. Many benefitted from her methods." MYRTLE I. KERNIGAN, Mrs. (P/AA) Wednesday, October 26, 1983 In Memory of...who died October 26, 1982 I cannot say and I will not say that she is dead.
