A career Navy Medical Officer, he had spent 30 years in the service before his retirement in 1947. A short time later, he came to Virginia Beach and began general practice. SYDNEY LAWFORD, Sir, Lt General Tuesday, February 17, 1953 Hollywood, California, February 16 - PETER LAWFORD's father, who once objected to his son's acting in movies but later not only approved, but did a bit of acting in them himself, died Sunday, February 15, 1953. He succumbed at age 87 after a relapse of flu. PETER, notified of the death, was reported flying home from a visit to Honolulu. His father, who retired, much decorated, after more than 40 years' service in the British Army, was an enthusiastic amateur gardener and an animal lover. His last words, a family friend said, were a wish that PETER take care of his cat. He and his wife, Lady MAY LAWFORD, found the alley creature crying in a garbage can eight years ago and took it home. Lady MAY asked that friends omit flowers at the private funeral and instead contribute to the Good Shepherd Foundation, which finds homes for animals. Born in London, he joined the Army at 17. He served in the South African War in 1901, receiving the Queen's Medal. His later decorations included the Crois de Guerre of France and Belgium, the French Legion of Honor, the Order of Leopold of Belgium, and the Order of St Maurice and St Lazarus of Italy. He was knighted in 1918. He objected when PETER acted in several British movies as a boy, but thought his son might get the acting bug out of his system. Later, after world travels, the family settled in Florida. With family funds frozen by World War II, PETER worked as a parking lot attendant and later, in Hollywood, as a theater usher. Then an agent landed him a role in "Mrs. Miniver," and his Hollywood career began. The family moved here in 1940. In recent years, his father, a tall, dignified, white-haired, mustached, played bit parts for a lark in several of PETER's films. He was a barrister in "Kitty", a clubman in "The Picture of Dorian Gray", and a General in "The Rogues' March". In this, his last picture, he was costumed as his past self, a British Army Officer.
