HENRY MCRAY, US Air Force Saturday, February 14, 1953 Suffolk, Virginia, February 13 - A man tentatively identified, of Warm Springs, Georgia, a recently discharged Air Force veteran, was found dead in an automobile near here Friday, February 13, 1953, a victim of carbon monoxide. Dr. G. RICHARDSON JOYNER, Nansemond County coroner, said "the death apparently was a suicide. " The body was found in an automobile parked on a trail in the woods off the Lake Prince Road about three miles north of here. The coroner said the identification was not complete, pending a check with authorities at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington. Identification cards found in the man's wallet referred to the air base. Also, found with the body was a discharge certificate from the Air Force, dated some time last Summer (1952). The dead man was described as 30 to 35 years old, dressed with meticulous neatness, 6 feet 4 inches tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes. The body was discovered Friday, February 13, 1953 about 9:00 am by M.C. EURE, a farmer in the neighborhood and GREELEY PORTER. The automobile was seen in the same spot, however, early Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 1953, with the motor running. If the suicide theory was correct, the man went about the job with great attention to detail. According to the Deputy Sheriff I.H. LUKE, a rubber hose was attached to the exhaust pipe and run into the trunk of the car. Then it went through a hole punched into the body to the rear seat and from there to the front seat, emptying its fumes in the lap of the victim, who was seated behind the steering wheel. The back of the rear seat of the two door car was removed to permit the hose to come through. The victim also, it appears, got some tools out of the tool box to punch the hole for the hose, then packed the box neatly in the trunk. A footlocker also found in the trunk had not been examined this afternoon. LUKE said he found a motor vehicle registration card in his wallet, giving his address as Warm Springs, Georgia. He telegraphed police there Friday, February 13, 1953 asking them to try to locate members of his family and notify them. Dr. JOYNER said the man probably was in the automobile around 12 hours before death took place. He surmised that he died Wednesday night, February 11, 1953 or Thursday morning, February 12, 1953. The body was taken to the Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk. CHARLES W. Thursday, December 13, 1906 Richmond, Virginia, December 12 - "Let me die tomorrow. Don't try to get the governor to postpone my hanging 30 days. Every minute I live on this earth in the shadow of the gallows is hell to me. I am ready to go now and I am willing to die. What good will 30 days do a wretched man like me?" These words, uttered by JAMES WARD, from his cell in the city jail to those who have interested themselves in procuring a respite for him, caused his listeners to thrill with horror. The petition for a respite was presented to the governor this morning and granted without delay. BUTLER. He left home on Wednesday, December 12, 1906 since which time friends and relatives have instituted a constant search for him. From the testimony adduced, it was shown the he had been suffering for some time from heart troubles and had been very despondent. This is presumed to have been the cause of his death. It was learned Saturday afternoon, December 15, 1906 the he carried a policy for $10,000 on his life with the Metropolitan Company, which has a suicidal clause attached. It was also stated that the ruling of the company is that if the holder of a life insurance policy commits suicide within 2 years after taking out the policy, no money would be paid to his estate, but that after 2 years, the policy was incontestible and the money was paid whether or not the holder committed suicide. It is understood that he took out his policy less than a year ago. The jury Saturday afternoon, December 15, 1906 after hearing the evidence of several witnesses publicly retired for a private conference. ROBERT MORGAN Friday, October 26, 1906 (this obit called him ROBERT MORGAN) Age 50, formerly a bartender for Grantham and Roache, Hill and Talbot Streets, was shot and instantly killed at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 25, 1906 by J.T. JONES, a former saloon keeper. The tragedy occurred in the saloon of G.B. SMITH, 63 Brewer Street. JONES fired but one shot from a 32 caliber revolver. The bullet entered MORGAN's left breast, penetrating his heart. There were several stories as to why he killed MORGAN. JONES had gotten a position with SMITH and it is said, claimed that MORGAN was following him, as MORGAN was after the same job and was reported to have been jealous of JONES. MORGAN's friends declare he was a quiet and inoffensive man. JONES is known to his friends as "Father Jones". He formerly conducted a saloon in Church Street, north of Queen and later ran a saloon in Fayette Street. Of late, he had been drinking considerably and at the time of the killing he was "down and out" as one of his acquaintances described him. MORGAN came here from Hertford, North Carolina, 27 years ago. At the time of he was killed, he was Sunday Saloon keeper for a Talbot Street "Social Club". He had a room at Wyman's "Busy Bee" Lodging House, in Talbot Street, where his effects remain. He has a brother who works for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. Another brother killed himself in Berkeley two years ago. MORGAN was unmarried. When the police arrived at SMITH's saloon, the body of MORGAN was lying in the rear. The right arm of the dead man was across his breast and the left arm lay by his side. A mall hole in the left breast showed where the bullet had entered. After Coroner KIGHT had viewed the remains, they were removed to the morgue and at 12:00 pm Friday, October 26, 1906, the coroner will hold an inquest at the office of High Constable JOHNSON. MORGAN and JONES were alone in the bar when the shooting occurred. ELLIS NOE, a former policeman, was standing in the city market when he heard the shot. He rushed over to SMITH's saloon in time to see JONES walking out with the revolver in his hand. NOE grabbed the weapon and escorted JONES to the central police station, when the police were first informed of the killing. JONES was immediately searched and locked up on a charge of murder. Only one of the five cartridges in the pistol had been discharged. That was the shot which killed MORGAN. HARRY ROACH, of the firm which formerly employed MORGAN, will take charge of the remains and hold them until MORGAN's people can be heard from. They reside at Hertford. Chief of Police BOUSH declined to allow any reporters to see JONES in his cell. Tuesday, November 20, 1906 (this obit called him JAMES MORGAN) The Corporation Court Tuesday, November 20, 1906 at 10:00 am, according to schedule, will take up the case of the Commonwealth vs "FATHER JONES", charged with murder a little more than a month ago. It is understood that MR. JONES will enter a plea of self defense, claiming that MORGAN entered the bar where he was employed and precipitated the trouble. MORGAN, so it is declared, thought that JONES robbed him of his job and went to the bar to get even. Friday, December 7, 1906 (this obit referred to him again, as ROBERT MORGAN) JOHN T. JONES, tried Thursday, December 6, 1906 in the Corporation Court on the charge of murder, was acquitted. The jury was out nearly an hour before agreeing to a verdict and it is understood that for some time, they stood two for conviction and ten for acquittal. The trial occupied the attention of the court throughout the morning and was well handled by both the commonwealth and the defense. The only eye witness to the shooting was the defendant and he claimed that the shooting was in self defense. In his own behalf, he testified that MORGAN entered the saloon, that he was drinking and that he cursed the defendant violently. He charged that JONES had robbed him of his job and declaring that he intended to kill JONES, put his hand to his hip pocket. Not until he made this demonstration, did JONES shoot him, he declared on the witness stand. S. JOHN MOULTER Wednesday, November 14, 1906 KILLED HUSBAND, NOW ASKS HEAVEN TO FORGIVE HER. MRS. MOULTER SAYS HE DESERVED HIS FATE, BUT SHE SENT HIS SOUL INTO ETERNITY UNPREPARED TO FACE JUDGMENT. Radford, Virginia, November 13 - Mrs. JOHN MOULTER, who shot and killed her husband Monday morning, November 12, 1906, is deeply repentant of her rash deed. She said Tuesday, November 13,1 906 in jail: "If I had a thousand worlds, I would give them if I could bring him back, not because I love him, for he treated me cruelly, but because of the wrong I have done and that he entered eternity unprepared." The woman is haggard beyond description and her one thought is, "Will God forgive me?" To a friend who visited her in jail, she declared that she did not dream of killing her husband, but that she was wrought up to such a pitch, she did not know what she was doing. "God only knows why I did it." she said. Mrs. MOULTER is a nervous wreck, her nerves having been upset for a number of years. She is a hard working woman and a beautiful housekeeper and gave her husband faithful, wifely affection. She has the reputation of being of violent temper and public sentiment is against her. It is stated on the best authority that her husband was peaceable and quiet with outsiders, but of disagreeable disposition in his family. The son had taken the mother's part for a long time, and he still turns towards her. He visited her in jail Monday, November 12, 1906, as did also the Baptist Minister and a neighbor, who had been her friend and to whom she had always gone with her troubles. Mrs. MOULTER seemed greatly affected by her friends' visit and threw herself into her arms and wept bitterly. Mr. MOULTER was in charge of the furnace. He was from Ohio, as was also his wife. He was 64 years old. Upon further investigation, it was ascertained that jealousy was at the bottom of the trouble, Mrs. MOULTER believing her husband unfaithful. A grand jury will be empaneled later to indict her. Mr. J.C. WYSOR, one of the leading lawyers of this section, has been appointed by the Pulaski Iron Company to assist Commonwealth's Attorney Draper in the prosecution. Sunday, December 2, 1906 Roanoke, Virginia, December 1 - The jury in the case of Mrs. HARRIET MOULTER, charged with the murder of her husband, whom she shot and killed in the Moulter home at Pulaski, Virginia several weeks ago during a quarrel, Saturday evening, December 1, 1906 returned a verdict of murder in the second degree, fixing the punishment at 18 years in the State Penitentiary. The defense was that the woman was insane on the subject of her husband's conduct toward her.
