GEORGE LEMUEL NEVILLE Junior Friday, November 30, 1906 / Saturday, December 1, 1906 / Sunday, December 2, 1906 A telegram announcing the sudden death Thursday, November 29, 1906 in Charlottesville, Virginia was received late Thursday afternoon, November 29, 1906. He was of this city and was on a short visit to friends in that city. He left home on Friday, November 23, 1906 on a short pleasure trip to Baltimore, Richmond and Charlottesville, and while at the hotel in the latter city, was stricken with partial paralysis and was removed to the University Hospital, where he died within two hours on Thursday, November 29, 1906. He was the eldest son of SARAH E. NEVILLE and the late GEORGE LEMUEL NEVILLE SR. At the time of his death, he was 28 years old, in the 29th year of his age and had a wide circle of friends in this city, who will be pained to learn of his sudden death. He was a consistent member of Monumental Church and quite active in church work. The body will arrive here Friday morning, November 30, 1906 and arrangements for the funeral completed. The funeral will take place Saturday, December 1, 1906 at 2:30 pm in the Monumental Methodist Episcopal Church. The service will doubtless be largely attended in view his wide popularity. He had been ill since December 2, 1952. A native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he was a son of the late JOHN THOMAS and Mrs. MARTHA HOPKINS NICHOLS. He was a member of the Park Place Baptist Church and the Norfolk Kiwanis Club. He started in the contracting business in 1916 as a partner in Nichols and Lindemann Inc. His associate was C.J. LINDEMANN, engineer and builder. Together, they built the Municipal Piers at the Army Base, in 1925-28, later, the Wainwright Building for William Sloan; 3 fireproof barracks at Fort Meade, Maryland; Jones Cold Storage, foot of East Main Street and a large number of residences and commercial structures in Norfolk and Portsmouth. He dissolved his partnership with C.J. LINDEMANN in 1933 and established his own contracting firm. His company erected the United Orthodox Synagogue on 15th Street and Kline's Chevrolet Garage, 13th and Granby Streets and rebuilt the Maple Lane Bowling Alley on 21st Street after it was burned. For the PER Center Shops, he built the Appliance Building and a second floor Fashion Center; Rose's 5 cents - $1 store, across the street, and the adjoining Candytown, drug store, Seaboard National Bank Branch and the C.J.T. office. He also built an addition to the Old Dominion Tobacco Company, Main and Randolph Streets and a large number of residential and commercial structures in this area. EVELYN NIMMO, Miss Tuesday, October 4, 1966 / Wednesday, October 5,1966 Norfolk - Age 92, retired Norfolk school teacher who is credited with being a founder of kindergartens, died Monday, October 3, 1966 in a hospital. A lifelong resident of this area, she was a daughter of WILLIAM T. and Mrs. VIRGINIA FORREST NIMMO. Miss Nimmo, who taught in the city schools before 1910, began at Ruffner. In 1917, she transferred to Walter Herron Taylor Elementary, where she had a first grade class 35 years. Not a strict disciplinarian, nevertheless, her pupils paid attention and minded, an associate recalled. She taught sight-reading, long before it was introduced into the curriculum. Her nature study classes were abetted by "nature walks" about the neighborhood. She is survived by several cousins. The body was taken to H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk. Though he had been feeble some time, he had been in bed only since last Sunday, November 4, 1906. His death was hastened by an accident some years ago on the Atlantic and Danville Railroad. In getting of a train at Suffolk, he had his foot crushed and some of his toes were amputated. The funeral will take place at 2:00 pm Sunday, November 11, 1906 from the residence of MANSFIELD BATTEN. Though there are not left enough of his Mexican War comrades within a radius of many miles to form a funeral escort, the remains will be accompanied to the grave by numbers of those who wore the Grey.
