VITTORIO EMANUELE ORLANDO (P) Tuesday, December 2, 1952 Rome, Italy, December 1 - Last surviving member of the Big Four architects of the peace of Versailles, died at his home Monday, December 1, 1952 at the age of 92. The man who steered Italy to victory in the first World War, suffered a stroke a week ago. Although he clung tenaciously to life, he knew the end was near. Before he sank into a coma Wednesday, November 26, 1952, the silver-haired Sicilian statesman, called "premier of victory" by the Italians, asked for the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Msgr. MARIO NASALLI ROCCA DE CORNELIANO administered them and conveyed the special blessing of Pope Pius XII. His family kept a long vigil at the bedside. His daughter, Mrs. CARLOTTA CARABELLI, her husband and their daughter kept the watch, later joined by his 4 sons, CAMILLO, FRANCESCO, CARLO and AMBROGIO. From time to time they heard the aged statesman mutter "Andiamo" meaning - let us go -. The end came at 7:55 pm (1:55 pm EST). Until the afternoon he fell ill, he stayed at work, attending sessions of the Senate of which he was a lifetime member by virtue of having been a premier. Just a week ago, after he returned home from a late Senate session, his daughter was awakened by the pawing of the family's pet dog on her bedroom door. She found her father slumped in the corridor. He had suffered a cerebral congestion. A cerebral hemorrhage preceded the final coma. He was born in Palermo, Sicily, May 19, 1860, a week before GARIBALDI's Red Shirts entered the city on the march which was to unite the Italian states. The Statesman's brilliant career began in 1897, when, as a young lawyer and university professor, he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies. The climax of his career came at Versailles. There he joined the other three giants of the Big Four - President WOODROW WILSON, Prime Minister DAVID LLOYD GEORGE of Britain and Premier GEORGES CLEMENCEAU of France - to write the Treaty of Versailles. He never signed the treaty. Italy had demanded inclusion of Fiume in her post-war kingdom. WILSON declared this was an unjustifiable claim. ORLANDO walked out of the conference, but he returned later to oppose the treaty. On June 19, 1919, he resigned as premier and years later said he did this so that he would not have to sign the pact. After his retirement from the government, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, serving through the first three years of the MUSSOLINI regime. He resigned in 1925 in protest against laws restricting freedom of the press. He returned to active political life after World War II. On July 30, 1947, in the Constituent Assembly, he once again spoke out against a peace settlement. He called the terms exacted from Italy - this time as an enemy of the United States - a "hard peace." In 1950, he led a group of Italian political leaders in an appeal to world powers to destroy their atomic bombs. His body will be entombed in the Church of St Mary of the Angels. Funeral services are expected to be held Wednesday, December 3, 1952.
