During the recent political campaign, he was chairman of the Republican Party of Nansemond County and chaplain of the Tri-County Republican Club which met in Suffolk. A member of the Somerton Friend's Church, he carried on correspondence concerning religious work with ex-President HERBERT HOOVER and became acquainted with Vice President RICHARD NIXON with whom he discussed topics of a spiritual nature. The wealthy socialite entered St Joseph's Hospital Wednesday, December 31, 1952 underwent an operation for a clot on the brain, and died at 7:15 am (MST) Thursday, January 1, 1953. She had been a near-invalid for almost a year because of a heart condition. The daughter of COLONEL H.H. ROGERS, of Standard Oil fame, the 53 year old Miss Rogers made headlines with her romantic affairs and marriages in the 1920's and 30's. She was married to an Austrian count, an Argentinean multi-millionaire and an American broker. Her husbands were COUNT LUDWIG SALM HOOGSTRAEN in 1924, ARTURO PERALTO RAMOS of Buenos Aires in 1927 and RONALD BUSH BALCOM of Vienna in 1936. Tuesday, January 6, 1953 Taos, NM - A wealthy socialite whose romantic exploits made headlines in the 1920's and 30's was buried here Tuesday, January 6, 1953 in a simple but colorful ceremony. Funeral services were held at the Little Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe for MILLICENT A. ROGERS, who died January 1, after an operation. A solemn requiem high mass was sung for the 53 year old daughter of COLONEL H.H. ROGERS of Standard Oil fame by the Rev RAY P. QUINN. She was buried in a simple mahogany casket, and a blanket of roses from the family was at the graveside. The services were attended by Spanish-language neighbors of Miss Rogers and by an unusual number of Indians from nearby Taos Pueblo in blankets and leggings. Since she came here four years ago to live a quiet life, Miss Rogers became interested in Indian affairs and made many friends among the tribesmen. Friends of the family, an Indian silversmith and a nearby rancher with Spanish forefathers were among the pallbearers. Even up to the time of the funeral, members of the family and Miss Roger's secretary declined to discuss family background with newsmen. ROLSTON, Conductor Sunday, January 11, 1953 Bond, Colorado, January 10 - Age 55, of Denver, stepped from his train and into eternity Saturday, January 10, 1953. He fell 1500 feet to his death in a gorge of Rock Creek Canyon, 12 miles from Bond in Northwestern Colorado, after his Denver and Rio Grande Western passenger train, the Mountaineer, came to a stop on a short bridge. The train had hit a rock while on the way from Craig, Colorado to Denver and the engineer brought it to a halt, although it was not derailed. He apparently opened the door of a coach and stepped out into the darkness to investigate. The trestle is narrow and has no side rails and there was nothing to break his fall into the canyon. Rail officials said the bridge is only 80 feet long, about the same length as a railroad coach and the he, through tragic fate, chose to leave the train by way of the only car stopped on the span. He was 38 years old. ROSCOE AILS, 54 year old comedian, remained in jail on murder charge in the slaying. A scheduled examining hearing for the two before Justice of the Peace, GLENN BYRD, was postponed until 2:00 pm Friday, December 26, 1952. The State agreed to the bond following a conference between defense and prosecution attorneys. No bond was requested for AILS. The examining hearing was postponed after the State asked more time to subpoena its witnesses. The balding comedian, dressed nattily in a grey suit and the well groomed stripper sat together and talked in whispers during their appearance. Her bond was posted by her lawyer. Her attorney, MAURY HUGHES, said he believed her family would meet her in Dallas or some other north Texas city for a Christmas reunion. She has told investigators that she was born in Fisher, Louisiana and that her mother presently lives at Port Arthur, Texas. The shapely 28 year old, who danced as the "Flame of New Orleans", also has a sister in Oklahoma. She has described the shooting as a gun duel between the night club comedian and a frustrated suitor who threatened to shoot the lock off their Dallas apartment. She was a member of Court Street Baptist Church and was employed by the Fidelity Storage and Salvage Company of Norfolk. RYAN, Rear Admiral, United States Coast Guard, Retired Thursday, February 26, 1953 Bethesda, Maryland, February 25 - Age 68, retired Coast Guard Rear Admiral, died Wednesday, February 25, 1953 of a heart attack while attending mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church here. The Rev ELMER T. FISHER, pastor of the church, administered last rites of the church before he died in a pew. He retired in 1947 after 42 years in the Coast Guard. His last station was as commandant of the Coast Guard District at Charleston, South Carolina. W.K. RYAN Tuesday, October 9, 1906 Lynchburg, Virginia, October 8 - The son of THOS. F. RYAN, New York Capitalist, died suddenly at Oak Ridge on Monday, October 8, 1906. He was 33 years old and had been suffering for some years with tuberculosis. Death, at this time, was unexpected. The body has been taken to New York for interment. He was compelled to spend much of his time in Colorado and had only recently returned to Virginia. In order to obtain an abundance of fresh air and exercise he spent much of his time in the supervision of his father's magnificent country estate in Nelson County. He had just made arrangements to accompany his wife to Richmond and to take part in the horse show this week. Several of his blooded animals had been entered in the competition. He had engaged several boxes for himself and his friends.
