He was the husband of Mrs. LIZZIE BRADSHAW UMPHLETT of Zuni and the son of LOUISE CHARLES UMPHLETT and LEAH DERBY UMPHLETT of North Carolina. He was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. MARTHA U. RHODES of Myrtle and Mrs. MAMMIE U. MARTIN of Williams; 5 sons, J. UNKNOWN "FEMALE INFANT" Friday, November 23, 1906 Badly decomposed, the dead body of a newly born female infant was found floating Thursday afternoon, November 22, 1906 in the canal which makes into Brambleton Avenue near Clay Street. The remains were brought to the morgue and later buried. Coroner KIGHT is conducting an investigation. UNKNOWN "NEGRO BOY" (AA) Saturday, November 24, 1906 (The boy killed was not named in the article, nor were ages given) WHITE YOUTH STABS NEGRO TO DEATH. News Ferry, Virginia, November 23 - a negro boy, who attacked OSCAR OAKES, son of W.G. OAKES, of this place, Wednesday night, November 21, 1906, was stabbed and killed. The boys were feeding horses at the OAKES home, when an altercation occurred, which resulted in the death of the negro. Young OAKES declares the killing was in self defense. UNKNOWN "NEGRO MALES" (AA) Thursday, December 6, 1906 Richmond, Virginia, December 5 - While stealing a ride on a Chesapeake & Ohio Freight Train at an early hour Wednesday, December 5, 1906, two Negroes, supposed to have been tramps, were killed at Fort Lee, a few miles from this city. The bodies have not been identified. One of the men had his body cut in two, both legs being broken. He was 21 years of age. The other, who lived a few minutes after the accident, was 30 years old. His skull was crushed. UNKNOWN "WHITE INFANT" Tuesday, October 23, 1906 a one day old white infant was found by C.E. SIMPSON, Sunday, October 21, 1906 near the Atlantic Terminal tracks between 13th and 14th Streets in the Seventh Ward. The little body was wrapped in oilcloth and the belief is that it was thrown off a passing car. The coroner gave the opinion that the infant had been born alive and that its cruel mother had allowed it to die. The police have no clue. The body was taken to the morgue and afterward, buried by the city. WILLIAM STITH UPSHUR Monday, September 21, 1868 Died on the morning of the 19th instant, aged 66 years. F.A. URSO, Professor Saturday, October 20, 1906 Died on Thursday evening, October 18, 1906 at his home in Huntersville, after a protracted illness. He was 60 years old. He was a member of the Norfolk Lodge No 38, B.P.O. Elks, who have taken charge of his remains and will arrange the funeral. Funeral services from Elks' Home, College Place, Saturday, October 20, 1906 at 1:00 pm. Friends are invited to attend. He had resided in this section for a number of years. OCIE J. He was a retired farmer and native of Isle of Wight County. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. G.W. HARGROVES of Warwick; Mrs. PERCY RIFE of Smithfield; 4 sons, LETCHER THOMAS UZZELL of Newport News, OTNEY UZZELL of Zuni, MELVIN M. UZZELL and W. JACK UZZELL, both of Windsor; 16 grandhcildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 23, 1953 at 2:30 pm at the Pine Grove Assembly of God Church by the Rev KENT RECKLEY, pastor and the Rev V.M. BULLABAUM of Newport News. Burial will be in the Central Hill Church Cemetery, Isle of Wight County. The body will be taken from the Jones Funeral Home to the church at 1:30 pm until the hour of the funeral.
