THOMPSON CEMETERY, Washington County, Virginia Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by Roy Yeater 23 April 1961 by Davis & McConnell This listing is from the book "HIGH ON A WINDY HILL" by Catherine Sanders McConnell who was Washington County (Virginia) Historical Society Librarian when my cousins Marie Thompson Eberle and John Allen Thompson visited Abingdon, Virginia to research her book "THE THOMPSON TWIGS" in 1974 and gave them much assistance. (As did her long time associate, Margaret Rogers Davis) I visited the Washington County Historical Society at Abingdon in June of 1997 and received much help from Jennifer Wagner. This listing is from their copy of "HIGH ON A WINDY HILL". *********************************************************************** Thompson, A.G.(Andrew Gibson Thompson)30 Dec. 1838-9 Jan, 1919, age 80y 10 mo Thompson, Eglantine V.(for Virginia - she was Eglantine Virginia Linder), w/oA.G. E., 15 Aug. 1824-3 Sept. 1840 (note says these could be sisters)(((SEE NOTE 3 - RJY))) NOTE 1 - Lilburn Trigg Thompson (brother to my grandfather Jasper Allen Thompson) was Beulah's (Beulah Thompson Stringer lives in Abingdon, VA) father who was born on and lived on the Thompson farm. His son Frank lived on a farm near his father's old home until some point. Lilburn Trigg Thompson was presumed lost in the North Fork Holstron River near White's Mill in Jan 1950 during a period of flooding rivers in the area. A memorial stone is in place beside his widow in the Thompson cemetery there. (Regarding White's Mill. It still is in place on the Holston. That belonged to the White family whose daughter was Ella Narcisses White Thompson, my grandmother. RJY) NOTE 2 - Hattie Branch Miller Thompson mother of Beulah Thompson Stringer (m.John O. Stringer) Beulah and John live in Abingdon, Va - June 1997. Beulah's mother Hattie died when Beulah was two years old. NOTE 3 - Refer to page 6 and 7 of "THE THOMPSON TWIGS". Note that Alcey Ann Elizabeth Thompson (p7), eldest daughter of Alexander Grandison and Sarah (Salley) Daily (Allen) was born in Washington County, Virginia on 14 Dec, 1843 so she was named after the young woman buried here who was sixteen when she died. That means that Alexander Grandison Thompson named his sixth child after his younger sister who had died. His younger sister who died was the fifth child of Sheldon and Ann Bowman Thompson. The other gravesite is Ann E. Thompson, infant daughter of Sheldon and Ann Bowman Thompson. ((To my knowledge, this connection and identification had not previously been made.))) ((They are indeed sisters as the note said. They are the daughters of my ggg- grandparents. RJY)) I did not find nor did I look for this second cemetery that contains only these two graves. The people across the street not far north of Wesley Chapel had lived on the farmstead and told me where that cemetery was. It was located nearby across roughly from the Wesley Chapel. By the way, the Wesley Chapel where Rev. A. G. Thompson preached has been renovated and has a new hillside asphalt parking lot. Next time! RJY) The Thompson farms are now the homes for four Ammish families from Lancaster, Pennsylvania who I enjoyed meeting during my visit. They had indicated an intent to care for the cemeteries. Roy J.
