Cornett DAMASCUS -- Bernice S. Cornett, 76, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va.,. and a daughter of the late Hayes and Lester Smith. She was a member of the Laurel Community United Methodist Church and was the widow of Herbert Cornett. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Velva Smith; and a brother, Jim Smith. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy C. Ratcliff and her husband, Don of Damascus; one son, Jerry W. Cornett and his wife, Marie of Damascus; one sister, Patricia Rosky and her husband, Clarence of Ravenna, Ohio; four brothers, Conley Smith Jr. of Waynesville, N.C., Lawrence Shoemaker and his wife, Betty of Kingsport, Frank Shoemaker and his wife, Margaret of Fayetteville, N.C., and John Shoemaker and his wife, Jackie of Boone, N.C.; three grandchildren, David Ratcliff Sr., Greg Cornett and his wife, Kim and Amy Cornett; four great-grandchildren, D. Brad Ratcliff Jr., Curtis Hutton, Alex Cornett and Sarah Grace Cornett; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R.J. Cullop and Rev. Leonard Smith officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. Pallbearers will be Larry Brown, Bill Thomas, Terry Reid, Tom Holliday, Ronnie Cullop and Randy Cornett. The family, ministers, pallbearers and friends will meet at the funeral home at 1:40 p.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral service at Garrett Funeral Home or at any time at the residence of her son, Jerry W. Cornett.
