He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was a school teacher in the Washington County schools. He was a graduate of William King High School, Emory & Henry College and did graduate studies at VPI and UVA. He taught at the Barrack School, Greendale High School, Cleveland High School, Damascus High School and Holston High School. His teaching included science and math. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church. He was a son of the late Carl F. Fleenor and the late Nina Hines Fleenor. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Thompson Fleenor of Damascus; two sons, Richard Carl Fleenor of Damascus and Eric Francis Fleenor and wife, Ann of Abingdon; one sister, Evelyn Aikman of Chevy Chase, Md.; two brothers, Donald Fleenor and wife Jeanette of Abingdon and Dr. Kenneth Fleenor and wife Shirley of Pulaski, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Robert N. Lominack Jr. and Rev. Leonard Smith officiating. Graveside services will be held in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Knollkreg Memorial Park with military honors by Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be David Baber, Jeff Huffman, Brian Thompson, Jack Henderson, V.T. Rector, Larry Brown, Hugh Bolling and Greg Case. Honorary pallbearers will be Logan Bowling, Eric Sutherland, Roy Grubb, Ralph Cox, Joe Goolsby, Jimmy Fleenor, Russell Fleenor, Don Wright, Mac Johnson, John Robinson, Dr. W.E. Cline, Jerry Cornett and Maurice Smeltzer. The family wished to acknowledge the excellent care and concern of the staff at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. Flowers will be accepted and those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Salvation Army, 137 Edgemont Ave., Bristol, TN 37620 or the Washington County Retired Teachers Association, c/o Lee Peterson, 15305 Foxchase Lane, Abingdon, VA 24210.
