He lived many years in Baltimore, where he retired from Bethlehem Steel. He returned to his native home of Washington County in 1987. He was of the Methodist faith and loved to sing gospel music. Mr. Gilley was a World War II veteran and served his country from 1941-1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and two Commendations for Bravery from Prime Minister Degaule of France. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.J. Gilley. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Cunningham of Abingdon; two sisters, Ester N. Bailey of Manassas, Va., and Ocie V. Price of Abingdon; three nieces, Betty Bailey Cain, Manassas, Marty Cunningham Whitt of Weber City, Va., and Glenda Cunningham Thompson of Clarksville, Tenn.; and one nephew, Billy Mack Price of Abingdon. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Neace officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Knollkreg Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be William Carmack, Matt Smith, Donald Wood, Paul Green, Roger Cunningham, Chesley (Barny) Barnard and Doug Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Patrick Wallace and the men of the Greendale Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the staff from Grace Healthcare Center who loved and cared for Mr. Gilley in a special way.
