He was the son of the late John Henry and Ira Belle McQueen Hill, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was a retired electronics engineer at Sperry Rand (later Sperry Univac) and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was the inventor of eight patents, including the Brushless Direct Current Motor which was used by NASA in the Gemini and Apollo space missions to operate life support and other systems. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Virginia Doyle Hill. Survivors include sons, Bill Hill and wife Kathy of Bluff City, Rick Hill and wife Faye of Bristol Virginia, Raymond Hill of Shady Valley, Tenn., Robert Hill of Bristol Virginia and Randy Hill and wife Sally of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Donna Buchanan of Johnson City; brothers, Durward Hill of Bristol Virginia, and Paul Hill of Bristol Virginia; sisters, Ruby Fleenor of Bristol Virginia, and Helen Morgan of Bristol Virginia; 10 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Hill officiating. Committal services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shaffer Cemetery on the Gate City Highway. Pallbearers will be the five sons and four grandsons, Bill Hill, Bart Hill, Brent Hill and Travis Hill. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-6:45 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to say a special thanks to the staff at the Hospice House.
