Hilton ABINGDON -- Donald E. Hilton, Sept. 6, 1915 - Jan. 14, 2003, a true Christian gentleman peacefully joined his heavenly family early in the morning, Tuesday, after a courageous battle with heart failure. He was the beloved husband of the late Maxine Calfee Hilton. He was the father of Howard Schaffer Hilton and wife Pamela (Cropper) of Atlanta, and Helen Calfee Hilton Shupe and husband John R. Shupe of Abingdon, and dear grandfather of Jonathan Shupe, Alexandria and Grant Hilton. He is also survived by his sister, Geraldine Draper of Slidell, La.; and brother, Bruce Hilton Jr. of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, G.B. and Mona Hilton; and brothers, James and Schaffer Hilton. For more than five decades, Mr. Hilton was a model of leadership in a wide variety of activities in the public life of Washington County. In 1946, he co-founded "Maxine's", a lady's special shop, which remained a landmark in the community for over 50 years. A native of Wytheville and an Abingdon merchant since 1945, Donald studied accounting and business administration and was a veteran of World War II. His service to the community included: president of the Abingdon Rotary Club, Retail Merchants Association and Washington County Chamber of Commerce, vice-president of Washington County Historical Society, Virginia Highlands Arts and Crafts Festival, Director of Glenrochie Country Club and of the Virginia Retail Merchants Association, Tennessee-Virginia Economic Group and member of the Official Board of Abingdon Untied Methodist Church. He was a member of Abingdon Lodge 48 AF & AM and has served on the Abingdon Town Council. Donald Hilton was a role model for everyone who cares about his or her community and family and wants to make a difference in the world. His tireless hours of work, in both business and community, were a joy to him because he loved life and the people around him. His family will miss him dearly. Visitation will take place at Campbell Funeral Home 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. Funeral services will be held at Abingdon United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, with the Rev. Dr. Robert N. Lominack Jr. and the Rev. Loretta Stutz officiating. Pallbearers will be Larry McClure, Edwin McClure, Teddy McClure, Levi Otey Jr., Doug Raines, C.T. "Butch" Meredith, Mike Lawson and Bill Mink. Graveside services will follow in The Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 126 W.
