Miller GLADE SPRING -- Mr. Roy Isaac Miller, 75, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at his home. Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late Robert H. Miller and Sallie Ryan Miller. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Newberry Miller; and three brothers, John Miller, Paul Miller and Walter Miller. He was a member of the Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Miller received his bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and his master's degree from Radford College. While attending Emory & Henry College, he played football and was a member of the 1950-51 team that went to the Tangerine Bowl, the first bowl game in the college's history. He was retired from the Washington County School System. He began his teaching career in Brammel, W.Va., and had taught at the old Glade Spring High School from 1955 until moving to Patrick Henry High School in 1960. While at Glade Spring High he served as teacher, football coach, baseball coach and basketball coach. From 1960-1989, he had served the school system at Patrick Henry as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and, at the time of his retirement, as principal. He was the football coach at the school from 1960-1972 and was named coach of the year in District 6 in 1969. He was awarded a life membership in the Southwest Virginia Coaches Clinic in 1983. Mr. Miller was a U.S. Army veteran, a former member of the Lions Club and was also a retired farmer. He had served the Town of Glade Spring from 1994-2000 as a councilman, vice mayor and mayor. He was an honorary member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Lifesaving Crew. He is survived by two sons, Michael Miller and David Miller, both of Glade Spring; two brothers, Charlie Miller and Preston Miller, both of Meadowview; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Denton officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery. Casketbearers will be James Crabtree, Tony Rector, Kenny Thomas, Bobby Miller, Vernie Miller, R.P. Miller, Bruce Bentley and Eddie Pruitt. In place of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Roy's memory be made to the Glade Spring Volunteer Lifesaving Crew or the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
