The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bristol Herald Courier Wednesday, February 19, 2003 Gladys Clara Phillips Mitchell CLINTWOOD -- Gladys Clara Phillips Mitchell, age 103, of Heritage Hall Health Care, formerly of Birchleaf, Va., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Jenkins Community Hospital, Kentucky. Born June 18, 1899, in Edinburgh, Scotland, where her parents were later killed during World War I, she then moved to Montreal Canada when she was 13. She later met and married William "Bill" Mitchell and traveled to Virginia and liked it so much they made it their home. She attended Bristol Business College, worked as a private secretary for the store manager of Clinchfield Coal Company Store and later worked as a secretary for Powers Chevrolet and then Colley-Rife Chevrolet. She was a member of Dickenson 1st Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer, played the piano and taught Sunday School. Her church membership started in the 1930s, first at Steinman then at Haysi. Mrs. Mitchell resided at her home in Birchleaf for many years until 1989, when she became ill and spent her remaining years at Heritage Hall Health Care in Clintwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1977. Mrs. Mitchell had no surviving relatives but is survived by a host of friends who loved her dearly. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Dickenson 1st Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Whitner, Rev. Ross Lindley and Rev. Richard Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in the Holston Conference Cemetery, Emory, Va. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends will be received Wednesday, Feb. 19, after 6 p.m. where a service will be held at 7 p.m. at Haysi Funeral Home. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
