Owens ABINGDON -- Mr. Granville J. Owens, 88, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Dickenson County, a graduate of Hiwassee College and East Tennessee State University. He was a teacher and principal in Dickenson County and in Washington County, was employed at Harmon Coal Co. and Mid Mountain Foods and was a member of Greendale Chapel. He was an avid reader and a fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He was preceded in death by a son, Alex Owens; a grandson, Scott Boatwright; and son-in-law, Steve Wingo. Survivors include his wife, Mrs.Virchel Deel Owens; two sons, Glenn Owens of Haysi and Bryan Owens of Bristol Virginia; three daughters, Joy Boatwright and Jean Wingo, both of Bristol Virginia, and Mary Minton of Abingdon; one brother, Leon Owens of Palatka, Fla.; two sisters, Gaynell Duty of Palatka and Ruby Deel of Prater, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements will be announccd later by Farris Funeral Service.
