Raines GLADE SPRING -- Jessie Kennedy Raines, 87, died Jan. 2, 2003. Born Sept. 22, 1915, near Gate City, she was the tenth of eleven children of Wade Powers Kennedy and Laura Belle Powers Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee Raines. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and a committed Christian. She taught elementary school for more than 40 years in Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland. She also enjoyed teaching high school Sunday school classes. Dear to her heart was an adult Bible group that gathered weekly in her home in Baltimore for more than 10 years. We were happy that she could spend her last years in Southwest Virginia, where she grew up. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and David Caskey of Glade Spring; one sister, Grace Kennedy Wesley of Tucson, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Laura Caskey of Durham, N.C., Susan Caskey Johnson and husband, Jeffrey, of Royston, Ga.; and several cousins in the Southwest Virginia area. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at 3 p.m. in Farris Cremation and Funeral Center (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens), 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. (276-623-2727), with Pastor Paul Bufford of Abingdon Bible Church officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children's Ministries of Abingdon Bible Church, P.O. Box 843, Abingdon, VA 24212 or to the Carl Ridge Ministries in Florida.
