Blevins GREEN COVE, Va. -- Rufus C. "Sweet" Blevins, 78, passed away on Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was a lifelong resident of Green Cove and was a son of the late Irving and Bertie Hagy Blevins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and had attended Russell's Chapel in Marion. Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Blevins, and a daughter, Edna P. Turnmire. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Blevins of Sugar Grove, Va.; five daughters, Mabel Farmer of Ypsilanti, Mich., Katie Gilley of Damascus, Gail Barr of Green Cove, Anita Cress of Sugar Grove and Alesia Combs of Marion; two stepdaughters; three stepsons; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in the Green Cove Baptist Church with Rev. Herman Cress and Rev. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Cove Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Lung Association of Virginia, P.O. Box 1249, Abingdon, VA 24212. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral service at the church or at any time at the residence of Jim and Gail Barr in Green Cove.
