Shelton RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jean Tomlinson Shelton, 85, formerly of Whispering Pines, N.C., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Raleigh. Born in Dott, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Everett E. and Elizabeth S. Tomlinson. She was the widow of her husband of 54 years, Randolph E. Shelton Sr. A 1938 graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va., Mrs. Shelton taught English and literature for more than 40 years at junior high and high schools in Matoka, W.Va., Holden, W.Va., Logan, W.Va., and Abingdon. She and her husband retired to Whispering Pines where both were active in Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church and other community activities. Mrs. Shelton volunteered her time generously at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C., and the Whispering Pines Thrift Shop. She served as regent and later as chaplain of the Alfred Moore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Surviving are her daughter, Anne E. Shelton of Raleigh; her son, Randolph E. Shelton Jr., of Pinehurst; her brother, Everett E. Tomlinson of Indianapolis; her sister, Mildred T. Murphy of Princeton, W.Va.; two grandchildren; 11 nieces and nephews; 22 great-nieces and great-nephews; and six great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Memorial contributions may be sent to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 330 South May St., Southern Pines, NC 28387. Mitchell Funeral Homes and Crematory of Raleigh was in charge.
