He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a son of the late William L. and Dora Whelock Slagle. He was a retired farmer and was preceded in death by a son, Gene Slagle. He is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Slagle; one daughter, Margaret A. Gentry and her husband, Bill, of Abingdon; seven grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Campbell officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Quesenberry, Frankie Quesenberry, Vic Kegley, Myrl Dunham and Bud Parks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus,VA 24236.
