Totten ABINGDON -- Mrs. Gladys Smith Totten, 92, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Abingdon. She was a native of Damascus and had lived in Abingdon since 1931. She was the daughter of the late Vinnie Jones and Emmett F. Smith of Damascus and Abingdon. She was the widow of Arthur J. Totten. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Garland J. Smith and Clifton B. Smith; and two sisters-in- law, Carolyne H. Smith and Virginia "Deet" Smith. Mrs. Totten was a graduate of Damascus High School, attended Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood College) and a graduate of Kingsport Business College. Before her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Totten was employed as a secretary for 40 years. She was with Kingsport Retail Merchants Association and secretary with Pet Milk Company 23 years until the plant closure. Mrs. Totten retired from the Washington County School Board office after 13 years with the special education department. Mrs. Totten was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, an honorary member of the former administrative board, member of Women of the Church and a member of the Clara Tucker Perry Circle as treasurer of the Sunshine Fund. Mrs. Totten is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Gail and Rita Totten of Clifton Forge, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Gloria Faw Totten and Richard Burleigh of Roanoke and Katina Diane Totten and Robert Neuls of Dalton, Ga. Also surviving are two grandsons and their spouses: Alan and Diane Brown and Clifford and Amy Jarrett; two granddaughters, Noel Jarrett and Suzanne and Matt Adcock; and five great-grandchildren, Ella Jarrett, Luke Jarrett, Tyler Adcock, Carter Adcock and Braden Adcock; a sister-in-law, Katie Totten; a brother- in-law, John Totten; beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; great-nieces and great-nephews; loving neighbors; and a special friend, Shelia Reynolds. A celebration of the life of Gladys Smith Totten will be conducted Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the Abingdon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Rowland, The Rev. Betty Reiff and the Rev. Jonathan Jonas will officiate. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time in the fellowship hall of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
