Transcriber's Notes: 1) Westmoreland County, Virginia, was formed from part of Northumberland County in 1653, according to the information on the Virginia State Library and Archives web site. 2) The land granted to John Paine/Payne by this 1664 patent appears to be located in what is now Westmoreland County. Machotick River is now called Lower Machodoc Creek. 3) Of this original 400 acre tract, it appears that the grandson of John Paine/Payne, "William Payne Jr.," sold 100 acres to Francis Aubrey in 1722. That deed and the 1723 power of attorney from "Elizabeth Payn," wife of "William Payn," (after the couple had moved to Hanover Co., VA) authorizing relinquishment of her dower rights in the land sold to Francis Aubrey are recorded in Westmoreland County, Virginia, not Northumberland. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
