He was born September 27, 1763, in King George, County, now Westmorland County, near the town of Leeds and was the son of Thomas Jett. In September, 1779, he enlisted in the militia of Westmorland County and served until January 31, 1781, when he was recommended by the Court of Westmorland County to the Governor of Virginia for promotion. He received the commission of a first lieutenant and served in that capacity until the close of the war. Charles C. Jett, executor of the will of William S.
