WILL OF WILLIAM BROWN 1774 The original of this will can be found in the Montross Court House, Westmoreland County, Virginia. Deeds & Will Book 16, pages 80 & 81. In the name of god amen. I William Brown of Washington Parish in the County of Westmoreland being very sick and weak in body but of perfect sense & memory praised be almighty god for it, and for divers good causes are hereunto moving, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form as followeth. First, I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty god that gave it and concerning all such worldly goods as it hath pleased Almighty god to bestow upon me, I give and dispose as followeth: Item, I give and bequeath unto my SON JOHN BROWN the whole Tract of LAND lying and being IN THE COUNTY OF LOUDON whereon Sam.l Davis now lives to him and his heirs Lawfully begotten of his body forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my DAUGHTER MARY WILLIAMS one shilling Sterling money. Item, I give and bequeath unto my FOUR DAUGHTERS __, JANE, HANNAH, ELIZABETH AND SALLY BROWN Four Negroes (two eldest excepted) by lotto drawn amongst them. My will & desire is that my whole Estate be kept together for the Term of three years for discharging my debts, and at the expiration of that time then MY OTHER ESTATE not given by this will to be equally divided amongst my FOUR DAUGHTERS as above (MARY WILLIAMS excepted) and my two SONS WILLIAM BROWN AND JOHN BROWN, by, by an equal dividend. And lastly I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint MR. WILLIAM BERNARD, THOMAS JETT, AND MY SON WILLIAM BROWN my true and lawfull Exrs. of this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby disannul and make void all other Wills and Testaments heretofore made ratifying and Confirming this my last Will and Testament.
