He was a life-long resident of Big Stone Gap. John was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. After graduating from Powell Valley High School in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years and served his country in Vietnam. He was a coal miner for Westmoreland Coal Co. for 25 years and was employed by A & G Company at the time of this death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sheila Ayers Herron; and his parents, Dewey and Audrey Gibson Herron, all of Big Stone Gap. Surviving are six brothers, one sister and their spouses: Bob X. and Twyla Herron and Jimmy L. and Patty A. Herron, all of Big Stone Gap; Dewey "J.R." Herron Jr. of Emporia, Kan.; Leroy B. "Rod" and Jewel Herron of Salem, Ind.; Danny R. and Brenda Herron of Pekin, Ind.; Gary S. "Stan" Herron of Gray, Ga.; and Brenda Carolyn "Sis" and Charlie Kilburn of Wooton, Ky.; also surviving are several special nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Calling hours 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. Funeral services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Caudill officiating. Military rites by the Norton VFW Post 4301 will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are asked to meet 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home to go in procession.
