Laney NORTON, Va. -- Meredith Pauline Laney, 78, passed away Monday evening Nov. 18, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Norton. She was a born in Norton and was a lifelong resident of Norton. Mrs. Laney was a mother and a homemaker and was a member of the Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church, Norton. She was a daughter of the late Fred Thomas Mefford and Essie Hall Mifford and was also preceded in death by five brothers, James Mefford, Thomas Eugene Mefford, Fred Junior Mefford, Joseph Mefford and Jerry C. Mefford. She is survived by her husband, Cecil Laney, Norton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Joyce Ann Laney, Norton, and Donald R. Laney, Baltimore; three grandchildren, Jennifer Laney, Heather Laney Robinson and Roger Laney; one great-granddaughter, Rachael Alexandra Clayton; two sisters, Nola Ponder, Baltimore and Doris Powers and husband David of Bluff City; three brothers, Claude Mefford and wife Bea, Baltimore, Don Mefford and wife Mae and Bill Mefford, all of Norton; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph McFarland officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Norton. Pallbearers will be family members and friends. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the funeral.
