Rains WISE -- Master Sgt. Paul C. Rains (Retired), 80, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac A. and Myrtle Thompson Rains; three brothers, Byron A. Rains, Isaac A. Rains Jr. and James E. Rains; a sister, Inez Wheatley; and two infant siblings, Jimmy and Elizabeth. He was a graduate of Wise High School, a retired employee of the Wise County Sheriff's Department for 21 plus years and of the Baptist faith. Mr. Rains was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam conflict serving in the U.S. Air Force. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lucille Dotson Rains; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randall and Teresa Rains of Richmond and Mark Rains of Wise; a brother, Carl Rains of Winter Haven, Fla.; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy and Dr. Carl B. Bolling of Roswell, Ga., Aileen Salyer and Jennie Robinson, both of Wise, and Jean Wheatley of Meridian, Miss.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Rains, Allison Rains, Laura Rains and David Rains; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Pastor Ben Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va., with military graveside rites conducted by the Pound V.F.W. Post 9600. The family will receive friends Monday evening 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wise County Sheriff's Department. Sturgill Funeral Homes, Wise, is in charge of arrangements.
