WISE COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Jack Ramsey, 24 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Jack Ramsey, 83, Fairway Dr., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Coeburn, Va., he was a son of the late John Alvin Ramsey, Sr. and Myrtle Kilgore Ramsey. He had lived in Elizabethton since 1949. He was a graduate of Ervinton High School, Nora, Va. and attended Hiwassee College. He graduated from the Southwestern Photo Arts Institute, Dallas, Texas. Mr. Ramsey served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was serving aboard the U.S. Sumner when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Most of his time during the war was spent in the South Pacific. He went into business with the late Wiley Coleman and was owner and operator of Coleman's Studio and Tri-State School Pictures until his retirement. He sold the business in 1979. Mr. Ramsey served as a City Councilman, member of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Elizabethton Golf Course Board, the Elizabethton Power Board as well as other boards. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the Elizabethton Golf Course, the American Legion Post #49, and the Veterans of Foreign War Post #2166. He was one of the originators of the 4th of July Parade on Watauga Lake. Mr. Ramsey was an avid fisherman and golfer and was a private pilot. He was preceded in death by a son, John A. Ramsey III; a brother-in-law, Wiley Coleman and a son-in-law, Dr. Stanley E. Nave. Mr. Ramsey was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Alice Gass Ramsey; a daughter, Kathryn Nave, of Evans, Ga.; a sister, Betty Coleman, of Maryville, Tenn.; a niece, Beth Coleman, Chattanooga; a foster daughter, Amy Barnett and her husband, Jason; grandchildren, Cody Nave, Hannah and Kayla Barnett, and his special friends, Greg, Michael, Kim Walsh and Kelly Miller. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bob Polk and Rev. Phil Gass officiating. The burial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004 in the Mausoleum of Hope, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Debbie Gouge, soloist, and Scott Reynolds, organist, will provide the music. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 6:55 p.m. Friday and also at 10:30 a.m. Saturday will be Wayne Eggers, Freddie Turner, Mark Schaff, Michael Gass, Bobby Gass, Louie Hopkins, Harold Turbyfield, Tom Milhorn, Hosferd Slemp, Dean Percy and Bill Schaff. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of Coleman's Studio, his golfing friends and his church family. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the Tennessee Army National Guard Funeral Detail. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Ramsey to the Boys and Girls Club of Elizabethton-Carter County, 104 Hudson Dr., Elizabethton, TN 37643 or the Carter County Humane Society, P.O. Box 134, Elizabethton, TN 37644. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery.
