Sturgill BIG STONE GAP -- Edith G. Sturgill, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 27, 2002 at Berkshire Nursing Home in Vinton, Va., after a short illness. She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and a member of Ayers Chapel Primitive Baptist Church for more than 80 years. Mrs. Sturgill was a retired employee of the old East Stone Gap Elementary School. Mrs. Sturgill was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Ray W. Sturgill; a daughter, Charlotte Faye East; her parents, Harrison and Clara Giles; brothers, Oliver, Winston, Clarence and Talmadge Giles; and sisters, Edna Caudill, Reba Johnson and Nell June Litton. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy and husband Burrall Paye of Roanoke; sons, Phillip and wife Mary Lou Sturgill of Downingtown, Pa., and Greg and wife Kathy Sturgill of Vinton; grandchildren, Patrick and wife Michelle Paye, Jennifer and husband Paul Busick, Andrew Sturgill, Steven Sturgill, Sean Sturgill and Aaron Sturgill; and great-grandchildren, Rylan Paye and Katie Busick. She is survived by a brother, Herman Giles of Bristol Tennessee; and a sister, Marjorie Jones of Big Stone Gap. She is also survived by her longtime friend and companion, Nancy ( "Toon" ) Belton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. Funeral services will be held at Holding Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Hugh Bowers officiating. Interment will be in Glencoe Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Memorials may be given in honor of Mrs. Sturgill to the charity of your choice. Holding Funeral Home of Big Stone Gap is in charge of arrangements.
