Vanover POUND -- Rev. Roy C. Vanover, 84, went home to be with his Lord Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Rev. Vanover dedicated his life to the Lord on July 22, 1949. He was called to preach Sept. 24, 1968, and was ordained Oct. 25, 1969. He was a good and faithful servant serving in various capacities. While serving as a member of Hamilton Chapel, he served as Sunday School superintendent and was very active in the music program. He also assisted in building the "Fellowship Hall" of Hamilton Chapel along with the help of his grandson, Rob Kiser. He had served as pastor of Pyles Memorial, Ferbie Chapel and Lone Pine Chapel. While serving as pastor of Ferbie Chapel, the church burned and he was instrumental in rebuilding the church. He was very active in many of the churches throughout the area through his preaching, singing and praying. He was a member of Lone Pine Chapel. In the earlier years of his Christian life, he sang with the "Friendly Four Quartet." His outreach to share the gospel by preaching and singing was also done through a radio station. He served as a member of the Dickenson County Conference and one of his roles was on the ordaining council. He also served on the Board of Directors for Camp Jacob. Rev. Vanover had worked in the coal mines for 39 years. He was a member of the UMWA. He retired from Bethlehem Steel at the age of 55, so he could devote his life to ministering to the sick in the hospitals, nursing homes and shut-ins. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also a friend to a host of people. He served as a role model of a Christian life to his family and friends. His favorite quote to his family and friends was "Let's see what the Bible says". He was preceded in death by his first wife, Golden Vanover; his son, Ronald Vanover; his parents, Rob and Rebecca Ann Vanover; sisters, Ruth Hollyfield, Phyllis Hollyfield and Beulah Dotson; and brothers, Raymond, Leslie, Kenneth and David Vanover; and stepson, Daniel Short. Survivors include his wife, Italy Short Vanover; daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Bud Kiser of Pound, Janice Moose of Boone, N.C.: sisters, Louise (Clayton) Taylor of Ohio, and Erma Rose, Pound; brothers-in-law, Bruce Cantrell, Pound and J.D. (Betty) Cantrell, Pound; grandchildren, Rob, Mark and Jeff Kiser, Kathryn Forrester, Channing, Derrick and Brittany Moose, and Dechari Cole; stepchildren, Bennie (Wilma) Short of Alabama, Billie (Don) Stallard of Pound and Redonda Short of Wise; nine great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; a very special niece, Sandy Meade; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, with funeral services held at 7 p.m. in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel at Baker Funeral Home in Pound. Rev. Lester Robinson will be officiating. Visitation is also scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 28, with graveside services at 1 p.m. at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Rev. Roy C. Vanover to Camp Jacob or to a charity of your choice. Amazing Grace.
