The records of this man are found in Augusta, Rockbridge, Botetourt, Montgomery, Washington and Wythe counties, Virginia. A few of them are as follows: 9/9/1772 - On Jury in Botetourt Co. (P 152 Annals of Southwest Virginia) 2/9/1774 - On Jury in Botetourt Co. (P 215 Annals of S W Virginia) 9/15/1778 - He deeded to Peter Kingery 200 acres on Mill Creek in Rockbridge Co, Va. (D B A, pg 61) 11/20/1778 - On jury, Washington Co. (P 1127 Annals of S W Virginia) 1778-1794 - He was in Rockbridge Co. Tax lists. 10/5/1779 - To survey Road in Montgomery Co, from his home on Reed Creek. (P 726 Annals of Southwest Virginia) 11/3/1779 - To survey road in Montgomery Co. (P 732 Annals of S W Virginia) 7/17/1780 - In case involving passage upon him of 1760 counterfeit dollar bills, Montgomery Co, Va. (P 1039 Annuls of S W Va) 12/8/1780 - Got 150 acres in Borden's Grant in Rockbridge Co from Dominick Moran. 11/20/1782 - On jury in Washington Co. (P 1127 Annuls of S W Va) 8/2/1783 - Deeded land to Samuel Lyle in Rockbridge Co located on the east side of Mill Creek. (D B A pg 412) 3/17/1784 - Deeded 36 acres to Samuel Lyle in Rockbridge Co (D B A pg 478) 5/8/1787 - Received a grant of 70 acres of land in Montgomery Co land on Wolf Creek, a branch of New River, Va. (Land Office Grant Bk 10 pg 211 and L C T W) 5/29/1788 - Received a grant of 260 acres in Augusta Co on the South River. (Virginia Land Office Grant Book 17, p 343) 1789 - In Augusta Co tax lists with 327 acres. 5/8/1789 - A James Dougherty was involved in a case in Rockbridge Co where liquor was said to have been sold without a license. (Augusta Records III, p 10) 1790 - In Augusta Co tax lists with 200 acres. 7/28/1790 - Was one of the Securities on the marriage bond of his son John Dougherty (Augusta Vol III, p 288) 1792 - Home was robbed and housekeeper mistreated in Rockbridge Co (Augusta Co Vol 3, p 35) 1794 - He sold the 150 acres of land in Rockbridge acquired 12/8/1780 from Dominick Moran to Levi Dunn. (Augusta Co Printed Records Vol III, p 192) 1/5/1796 - He deeded 3 acres to Chris Haylman in Rockbridge Co (D B C, p 235) 2/1/1797 - He received a grant of 249 acres in Wythe County, Va on the south side of Holstein River adjoining Iron Mountain. (Va Land Grant Office Grant book 42, p 210) He died intestate in Wythe County in 1790. There was litigation over his estate. All of his heirs lived in Rockbridge Co except Daniel who lived in Wythe County at the time of his father's death. From information in connection with the suits we learn that James had a brother Thomas and had purchased from Thomas a legacy left to Thomas' wife in New York State. Thomas also lived in Wythe at the time. Among the property owned by James was one in Rockbridge Co where an Ordinary was run by Jeremiah Boys. The names of the children and grandchildren are from the records of the suits over his estate. The land owned by him in Wythe Co where he died had been occupied by an Iron Works. This went to his son Daniel who sold it. It was involved in a suit in Augusta Co in December 1807. (Vol II, p 130) (See Augusta County Printed Records, Volume III, pgs 65 and 93, and Volume II, p 130) 10/6/1806 - His heirs joined in deeding 200 acres to William Taylor, land in Augusta County; heirs in Rockbridge County (Deed Bk T, p 83). Heirs signing were Hannah, David and wife Ruth, Daniel and wife Betty, Thomas and wife Nancy. He married Hannah ___.
