All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ==================================================================== This is the obituary of my great grandfather, Robert Wenten Pauley, who was born in Wythe Co., VA. His father was Josiah B. Pauley and his mother was Ann F. Carrico (daughter of Wilkerson Carrico). Josiah B. Pauley is recorded as a Prisoner of War (Civil) at the Johnson's Island Prisoner of War Depot located in Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio. He arrived at the prison on June 24, 1864 and was released on June 15, 1865. He served as a 2nd. Lieut. I have no information on him after 1865 and he is not found on the 1870 census. I feel sure he probably died between 1865-1870. Obituary - Foard County News (Crowell, Texas) R. W. PAULEY, Died at Home in Margaret; Funeral here Saturday...from Foard County News November 22, 1929 Funeral services for R. W. Pauley were held Saturday afternoon at the local Church of Christ with Rev. E. J. Smith officiating. Mr. Pauley died last Friday at his home in Margaret where he has resided for the past eight years. he had been seriously ill for about ten days preceding his death. Mr. Pauley has lived in Foard County since 1908 and was well known over this section. He engaged in farming during his residence in Foard County; although he retired from active life about the time he moved to Margaret; about eight years ago. On coming to Foard County in 1908 he settled on a farm about five miles northeast of Crowell, just north of the J. W. Bell place. He was born in Wythe County, Virginia, on December 4, 1851, and was 78 years old at the time of death. He came to Texas in 1873, settling in Navarro county. He married Miss Elizabeth JOHNSON in Navarro County on May 31, 1874 and united with the Church of Christ the same year. Mrs. Pauley and three of the eight children born to this union still survive him. The children are D. G. Pauley of Margaret, J. F. Pauley who lives near Crowell and W. F. Pauley of Bradley, Arkansas, all of whom were here at the time of the death. Two brothers, Paul Pauley in Virginia and W. Pauley and eleven grandchildren also survive the deceased. Mr. Pauley moved from Navarro County to Hill County and later to Grayson County where he and his family remained for only a short time before coming to Foard in 1908. Although he was just a mere boy of 14 years at the time, yet Mr. Pauley drilled for service with the Confederate army during the last year of the Civil War. The war ended, however, before he was able to see service in a battle. Mr. Pauley was also a Master Mason. Mr. Pauley's kind disposition and Christian life will live as an everlasting monument to him. He made great numbers of friends wherever he lived and his loss is keenly felt. Pall bearers at the funeral were L. B. Morgan, Claude Orr, John Hysinger, J. S. Smith, Will Blevins and Dave Sollis. Interment was made in the Crowell Cemetery. Other relatives present for the funeral were John L. Williams of Valley Mills, Texas, grandson; W. F. Johnson, brother of Mrs. Pauley and family of Haskell, Texas and T. M. Choate of Snyder, Oklahoma, father of Mrs. D. G. Pauley.
