YORK COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Western Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Western Cemetery: 1936 Oct. 9 Research made by Carrie Roberta Hawkins Cemetery Location: Near Messick, Virginia, on west side of road and down a lane about 150 yards, and about .5 mile above “Amoy’s” Wharf. York Co., Virginia DATE: 1794. OWNERS: [blank] DESCRIPTION: It is enclosed and a large gate at the entrance. A few years ago there was added about a fourth of an acre. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This cemetery is very old. On one stone the inscription: M. F. 54 – 1794 is to be seen on this stone which is flat, not a slab, and the 54 is supposed to mean that the man was fifty-four years old when he died. This man was carried to the cemetery in an ox cart, the stone was placed at the head and a little twig placed at the foot; which grew to be a large mulberry tree, but was cut down about fifteen years ago [1936].
